Did you know that some manufacturers deliberately turn out cheap merchandise to provide discounters with hidden markups and phony high list prices?." (illustrator). 2nd Printing. The big bargain: this is the glittering promise held out by discounters. Each year they persuade millions of American shoppers to join the hunt for fantastic bargains. Famous brand names are advertised at incredibly low figures. Price tags sparkle with neatly crossed-off high prices. This seems proof that conventional retailers make excessive profits, that neighborhood merchants overcharge. But is this true? Have discounters really found a way to slash all prices drastically? In the first expose of discounting, Walter Henry Nelson reveals the gimmicks behind the fabulous facade. For every shopper who comes away with a genuine bargain, many more find they have bought shoddy or overpriced wares. For every item sold at less than list price, many more carry big markups, in some instances ranging higher than 200 percent. Discounters are in business to make money. Their profits are paid for by the consumer. Did you know that the famous brand-name products featured in some discounters' ads are often not obtainable in their stores? see list (illustrator). This is a two-volume copy of St. Ronan's Well, by the great Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott (1770-1832). It is the 18th of his Waverley novels which, for nearly a century, were the most-read novels in Europe. Saint Ronan's Well was published in 1824. It is set in a fashionable spa in the Scottish Borders and is the only Scott novel with a 19th-century setting. The story concerns the rivalry of two men: Valentine Bulmer, the Earl of Etherington, and his half-brother Francis Tyrrel. Both wish to marry Miss Clara Mowbray, who is the sister of John, the laird of Saint Ronan's. These books are part of an incomplete set I have, which is also listed here. Between 1892 and 1894, the Boston publisher Estes and Lauriat published the collected Waverley novels. The introductions of each were written by the Scottish poet and critic Andrew Lang (1844-1912). In 48 volumes, they published a leather set, a marbled-cover set and a plain set. I have volumes of the plain set. By 'plain', I mean attractive navy blue boards with ivory title plates on the spine. The publisher has stated 'Large Paper'; the paper is thick and of best quality. There were 1000 copies of this set printed. This is set #679. That is stamped on each book in red. There is red type on the title page and on the tissue paper fronting each illustration. Each book has six black and white illustrations. The illustrations in these two books are covered with tissue paper. The illustrations are stated as original etchings and/or etching from paintings, by William Henry Boucher (English, 1837-1906), Sir George Reid (Scottish, 1841-1913), Sir David Young Cameron (Scottish, 1865-1945), Amédée Forestier (French, 1854-1930), Robert Walker Macbeth (Scottish, 1848-1910), William Brassey Hole (Scottish, 1846-1917), Gaston Albert Manchon (French, 1855-1951), G. Rodriguez (unknown), Alfred Boilot (French), William Wright-Nooth (English). In both cases, the title panels are faded and scratched. Both volumes have clearly never been opened. They have some scuffing on the back cover and a small fade mark on the front. Both books have fully-intact gold trim; only the tops of the pages were originally trimmed. In the case of both books, the interiors are perfect. No foxing.

see list (illustrator). This is a two-volume copy of The Antiquary by the great Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott (1770-1832). It is the 3rd of his Waverley novels which, for nearly a century, were the most-read novels in Europe. The Antiquary was first published in 1816. It surrounds Jonathan Oldbuck, an amateur historian, archaeologist and collector of items of dubious antiquity. There are adventures and romance, and it offers a vivid exploration of Scottish society at the close of the 18th century. It was Scott's favourite novel. Each book has six black and white illustrations. The illustrations in these two books are covered with tissue paper. They are stated as original etchings and/or etching from paintings, by Alfred Holst Tourrier (British, 1836-1892), Pierre Teyssonnières (French, 1834-1912), Victor Louis Focillon (French, 1849-1918), Charles Courtry (French, 1846-1897) , William Wright-Nooth (English, b c 1858), Henri Manesse (French, 1854-1940), John Blake McDonald (Scottish 1829-1901), T.J. Dalgleish (British, d 1919), Robert Herdman (Scottish, 1829-1888), Benjamin Damman (French, 1835-1921), John MacWhirter (Scottish, 1839-1911), Alexander Ansted (English, 1859-1948), Sam Bough (English, 1822-1878), Charles Bernard de Billy (French, b 1840), John Moyr Smith (Scottish, 1839-1912), William McTaggart (Scottish, 1835-1910), Charles Oliver Murray (Scottish, 1842-1923), John Andrew & George Andrew (Boston). In both cases, the title panels are faded and scratched. Volume II has some spots on the spine and covers. Volume I has a couple of faint spots on the spine. The cover is perfect. Volume II's back cover was exposed to water at some point and the blue is slightly faded at the bottom. On the inside, two of the facing tissue paper pieces have come away from the binding. Both books have fully-intact gold trim; only the tops of the pages were originally trimmed. In the case of both books, the interiors are perfect. No foxing. It appears that no one ever read them.

see list (illustrator). This is a two-volume copy of ANNE OF GEIERSTEIN, or THE MAIDEN OF THE MIST, by the great Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott (1770-1832). It is the 24th of his Waverley novels which, for nearly a century, were the most-read novels in Europe. Anne of Geierstein, or The Maiden of the Mist, was published in 1829. It is set in Switzerland in the 15th century, and involves the politics of the Swiss involvement in the Burgundian wars. Two Englishmen involved with the Duke of Burgundy travel with a Swiss woman who has powers which defy explanation. They also encounter a shadowy political group. Each book has six black and white illustrations. The illustrations in these two books are covered with tissue paper. In one book, the front one fell out and it was placed inside the back cover. The illustrations are stated as original etchings and/or etching from paintings, by Jacques Etienne Pannier (French, 1802-1869), Ricardo de los Ríos (Spanish, 1846-1929), Charles Barbant (French, 1844-1921), and Alphonse de Neuville (French 1835-1885). In both cases, the title panels are faded and scratched. Both have a couple of small spots on the spines. Both have fully-intact gold trim; only the tops of the pages were originally trimmed. Both are in perfect condition, with no foxing. They have not been read; I don't think they've been opened.
