Edward Oxford firing at Her Majesty and Prince Albert (lithograph); lithograph by W.Clerk, London from a drawing by F.Glover 1840; designed and presented Gratis with no.78 of The Fly, Victorian magazine published in 1849. hand colored., 8 x 10 1/4 ins. The first of eight attempts on the Queen s life. Oxford was charged with treason but found not guilty by reason of insanity. After a spell in Bethlem and then Broadmoor, he was transported to Australia in 1868 where, under an assumed name John Freeman, he married a widow and became a churchwarden. He wrote articles under the name Liber for the Melbourne Argus on the city s slums, markets and racetracks which were published as Lights and Shadows of Melbourne Life [1888]. He died in 1900. The identification of John Freeman as Edward Oxford was only made in 1987 in an article by F.B. Smith, Lights and Shadows in the Life of John Freeman, published in Victorian Studies.
