Contains red and black printed title, 28 pp. Printed on hand-made paper for private circulation. Presentation inscription from the author to the front free end paper 'James Niven Esq. M.B., LLD - With the author's kind regards, 27th December 1914'. James Niven was a Scottish physician, perhaps best known for his work during the Spanish Flu outbreak in 1918 as Manchester's Medical Officer of Health, he held that position for 28 years (1894-1922), until he retired. He had previously been Oldham's Medical Officer of Health. He lectured in Public Health in Manchester. He committed suicide on The Isle of Man in 1925 by taking an overdose and swimming out to sea. Light off-settting to the end papers and in Very Good condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. LITERARY CRITICISM.

Title page 1 and page 2 are detached and loose. Two small closed tears to pages 1 and 2. Light to moderate toning and foxing to the text. Light, occasional, pencil marginalia in the text. Two words underlined page 116: "murder" and "manslaughter" and both words written in the margins of the page. Previous owner name and number 181 written top of the title page. The verdict was "Not Guilty." Shaw and Shoemaker 11474; McDade 860 - "The killing of Austin by Selfridge arose out of a political dispute between Selfridge and the victim's father. The grand jury refused to indict him for murder; the charge was manslaughter. The case was long an authority on the law of self-defense. Paul Revere was a member of the jury which acquitted Selfridge." The previous owner of this copy Thomas C. Worthington (1782-1847) was a U.S. Representative from Maryland. He was a Captain in the War of 1812. Later he studied law and practiced in Annapolis. He was elected to Congress in 1825 serving two years. (Wikipedia).
