Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Firste Edition Stated. 388 Pages Indexed. Brand new and bright beige linen boards. Dust jacket has light chipping and two small closed tears at the top edge. No other defects noted. Interior text pages are near flawless. For those who've long thought cowboys spend their nights on the range crooning lullabies to cattle, this book will come as a shock. To those who love joining in a lusty chorus of the kind of song their mothers probably never taught them, and to those who are serious students of folk music, cowboys, or the American West, the editor and compiler offers an eye-opener of another sort. This is the first field collection of songs from working cowboys to be published in many years. Honest and realistic, it's also the first to demonstrate that bawdy songs have always been an integral part of cowboy culture. The cowboy sings what he knows from his past and what appeals to his emotions. He is a sentimentalist, but his favorite songs are robust bawdy songs, that range as do dirty jokes and stories, from gross to clever humor. Logsdon has painstakingly sought out, listened to, and recorded the songs of America's working cowboys. While this may tarnish the popular image of the cowboy, it creates a much more thorough and accurate portrait of a specific group of working men. Bawdy material has always been integral to cowboy culture, although sadly neglected or suppressed by folklorists and historians. Logsdon with great skill and humor, corrects this long-bowdlerized occupational record. Here's an important side of cowboy life we all knew existed but about which little has been written. This is a major contribution to folklore and popular culture history and the social psychology of American cowboy culture. Includes 61 songs with music and lyrics. One of the songs is a Texas Ranger protest song, probably dating from the Republic of Texas, in which the Rangers protest their very low wages and skimpy rations.Write for list of the 62 songs and list of black and white photos.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. With this book the University of Oklahoma Press inaugurated a new series of histories, the Oklahoma Horizons Series, sponsored by the Oklahoma Heritage Association. This series has included books on Oklahoma institutions and organizations that have had a marked influence on the educational, cultural and economic life of Oklahoma. This volume is the first of a series. The University of Tulsa was first called the Presbyterian School for Creek Indian girls and was situated in Muskogee. From that beginning the school changed goals, directions, names, and locations, before becoming firmly established as a private nondenominational university. This volume tells the story. The volume itself has beautiful blue cloth covers with sharp gold lettering on the spine. A small bump at the top of the spine causes me to downgrade condition to near fine. Dust jacket is protected in an archival quality Brodart cover. Dust jacket has an approximately 3/4 of an inch tear at the top of the front cover near the spine, also a bit of chipping at the top of the spine. Many would grade a notch higher on both book and dj. This book delineates the history of the University. A nice copy.

This is the first book in the Oklahoma Horizons Series. This book delineates the history of the University from its start in Muskogee as the Presbyterian School for Creek Indian Girls in 1882, later moving to Tulsa as the Henry Kendall College, and finally in 1921 as the University of Tulsa still a Presbyterian School, but reliant more on private funding (oil) than church. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
