"'La pistola fatta per la peste' di Lorenzo di Filippo Strozzi (1482-1549) è un esercizio letterario che mostra artifici retorici ed "eleganze" della letteratura rinascimentale e che si riallaccia a quella tipologia di testi nei quali viene descritto lo spostamento in vari luoghi del protagonista che incontra alcuni personaggi con i quali dialoga, in un genere "ibrido" fra lettera, novella e diario. Nell'epistola strozziana è contenuta una duplice descrizione: di una giornata dell'autore, che un primo maggio, partendo da Palazzo Strozzi, si reca in alcune zone della città, e della peste che colpì Firenze più aspramente nel 1523. Di questa lettera esiste anche una copia autografa di Machiavelli (Banco Rari 29 della Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze) che ha fatto propendere taluni studiosi ad attribuirgliela. Tuttavia, come nel caso della Commedia in versi, la Pistola deve essere considerata il prodotto di una stretta collaborazione letteraria: frutto, dunque, di un'autorialità "mista", visto che Strozzi ne è certo il primo e principale autore, ma vi fu un contributo di Machiavelli, difficile da quantificare, che probabilmente andò oltre la revisione testuale documentata dalle (.)".
