Februar 1910 in Prag, Königreich Böhmen, Österreich-Ungarn; gest. 12. Juli 1986 in Ennetbaden, Aargau, Schweiz) war Schriftsteller, Übersetzer, Schauspieler und Regiss…eur sowie Entdecker und Förderer von Fritz Hochwälder, Friedrich Dürrenmatt und Max Frisch. Peter Lotar wuchs zweisprachig in Prag auf. Nach Absolvierung der Maturitätsprüfung 1928 studierte er Kulturgeschichte und außerdem Schauspiel an Max Reinhardts "Schauspielschule des Deutschen Theaters" in Berlin (1928-30). Engagements in Berlin (bei Max Reinhardt, Erwin Piscator) und Breslau folgten, ehe er 1933 nach Prag zurückkehrte. Zugleich engagierte er sich in antifaschistischen Aktivitäten. Nach der deutschen Besetzung 1939 gelang ihm die Flucht in die Schweiz. Von 1939 bis 1946 war er als Schauspieler und Regisseur u. a. am Theater Biel Solothurn tätig. Von 1946 bis 1949 wirkte er als Cheflektor und Dramaturg beim Reiss-Bühnenverlag Basel, wo er die frühen Stücke von Fritz Hochwälder, Friedrich Dürrenmatt und Max Frisch entdeckte und betreute. 1947 wurde sein Künstlernamen Peter Lotar behördlich anerkannt.
