Full-page engraving 23.5 x 33.6 cm (including caption) on a single newspaper leaf, relevant text on the verso, edge tears (no loss) and creasing, in very good condition. Dramatic and scarce engraving depicting the destruction of the Canton Factories, principal site of Western trade with China, at the onset of the Second Opium Wa…r, (1856-1860) by a 25 year old Gustave Doré. He contributed to the "Illustrated Times", a chief rival to the monopoly of "The Illustrated London News". Whilst the self-taught Doré did not enjoy initial success in France, for Victorian Britons Doré's art was celebrated, producing (with Blanchard Jerrold) his landmark account of mid Victorian London "London: a pilgrimage" over four years (1869-1872). From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker.

Panoramic Print. Condition: Very good condition. First printing. A very detailed birdseye view of London, drawn by Thomas Sulman engraved by Robert Loudan. Possibly viewed from a hot air balloon above Kennington, depicts the Thames from the Houses of Parliament to St. Katherine's Dock. North of the river landmarks include Buckin…gham Palace, Hyde Park Corner, the Clock Tower of Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St. Paul's Cathedral, Monument and the Tower of London, with Regent's Park, Hampstead and Highgate. On the south side of the Thames are Lambeth Palace, Waterloo Station, St. George's Circus and Elephant & Castle. Wood cut engraving, original folds. A large, striking panoramic view of lower Manhattan, that portion that is south of Central Park, looking across the Hudson River from a viewpoint in Hoboken, New Jersey. The borough of Queens is seen clearly across the East River. City Hall, the financial district, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, The Battery, Tribeca and Roosevelt… Island are all identified. There is a lot of maritime activity to be seen on each of the rivers. Published as an extra supplement to weekly news journal "The Illustrated London News". Size: 440 x1160 mm. Uncoloured woodcut engraving. Good condition. Panorama has folds and the back has been strengthened. There are repairs to tears in the margins. Presented in handmade wooden frame.
