This book offers a window into the founding and early history of Battle Abbey, built following the momentous Battle of Hastings on land consecrated by King William. The anonymous author recounts the story of the abbey's establishment in 1076, its dedication to St. Martin of Battel, and the miraculous events that occurred at this site. The narrative delves into the disputes between the abbey and various bishops and nobles, providing insights into the power struggles and feudal customs of the period. Through a detailed account of the abbey's possessions and privileges, the book explores the significance of the monastery and its role in shaping the social, economic, and religious landscape of medieval England. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 30 numbered pages plus covers and end papers. Browning paper covers, caused by sun discolouration, are somewhat loosened on the binding. Front cover partially detached (now housed in a presentation bag for protection.) Appears to be an interesting little account of the castle and its owners over its history. This copy has the inscription in light pencil of AWF Fuller, from whose descendants the book was acquired (see other listings.) He has written "AWF Fuller 17/08/1904 (see page 23) A "New Edition" 1871" On the ffep a brief letter has been stuck onto the page which appears to be from the author, dated 1857, to Dr. French of Lewes. He gives thanks to the recipient and offers "my little account of Bodiam." He signs off with a rather flamboyant and ornate autograph. All of which making this pamphlet a rather unique piece and with great provenance.
