Besitzvermerk des Theaterkritikers Walter Ulrich auf Vorsatz. Erschien erstmals 1852. Der Ve…rfasser Heinrich Smidt (auch Smidt von Altona, 1798 Altona - 1867 Berlin) fuhr jahrelang zur See und studierte anschließend Jura und "schöne Wissenschaften". Er wurde dann Redakteur der "Staatszeitung", darauf Mitarbeiter und Archivar der Marineabteilung im Berliner Kriegsministerium. Er hatte Verbindungen zu Devrient, Fontane und dem literarischen Verein "Tunnel über der Spree". Er war Autor zahlreicher Seefahrts- und Abenteuerromane und schrieb auch Theaterstücke. Theodor Fontane schrieb über ihn in "Von Zwanzig bis Dreißig": "Er war der typische Schiffskapitän kleinen altmodischen Stils: mittelgroß, dicker Bauch und kurze Beine, mit denen er, sei's aus Gewohnheit, sei's aus Berechnung - ich halte letzteres für sehr wohl möglich - den bekannten Seemannsgang, das Fallen vom rechten aufs linke Bein, virtuos ausführte. Dazu Treuherzigkeitsmienen und vor allem auch Treuherzigkeitssprache [.]. Man nahm ihn nicht für voll und konnte ihn nicht dafür nehmen, denn ich sage nicht zuviel, wenn ich behaupte, daß in den zehn Jahren unseres gesellschaftlichen Verkehrs auch nicht ein einziger selbständiger Gedanke über seine Lippen gekommen ist. Er war im höchsten Grade trivial, dabei seine Gemeinplätze, selbstverständlich, wie Offenbarungen vortragend. Witz absolut ausgeschlossen. Aber auch das, was er als Altonaer Kind, als dickbäuchiger Kapitän und Mann des steifen Grog eigentlich hätte haben müssen: einen gewissen Teerjackenhumor, auch von diesem keine Spur. Er vermochte sich nicht einmal zu einer Anekdote aufzuraffen, und wenn er es tat, verdarb er sie. Diese Ausgabe herausgegeben, neu bearbeitet und mit zwei Schlußkapiteln versehen von Alfred Richard Meyer. WG 98 (Meyer). Raabe 207, 83 (Meyer). Der Verfasser Heinrich Smidt (auch Smidt von Altona, 1798 Altona - 1867 Berlin) fuhr jahrelang zur See und studierte anschließend Jura und "schöne Wissenschaften".
