This book delves into the world of architectural design, offering a rich collection of plans and ideas for dwellings suited to "genteel life," including cottages, lodges, and villas. The author goes beyond mere aesthetics, emphasizing the importance of combining practicality with elegance, ensuring that beauty and comfort go hand in hand. Stepping back from rigid architectural rules, the author champions the value of taste and imagination in design, encouraging a "painter's eye" to create picturesque structures that harmonize with their surroundings. This approach celebrates the charm of varied lines and forms, advocating for features like "lean-to closets," "bow-windows," and "pent-houses" to create a visually captivating dwelling. The book also offers insightful observations on the construction and character of different types of buildings, providing guidance on materials, color choices, and even garden layouts. It delves into the specific characteristics of various architectural styles, including the "ancient English style" and the "Cottage OrnÃÂ e," offering valuable insights for those seeking to build or renovate in these distinctive aesthetics. Ultimately, this book reminds us that a well-designed house is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a reflection of individual taste, a haven of comfort, and a contribution to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Quarto, with 22 engraved plates (eight double-page); in the original grey boards with paper label, with the 16pp. publisher's catalogue. A very charming, but practical, pattern-book aimed at the country gentleman who wished to construct villas which looked like farms, and for genteel farmers who wanted their farms to look like villas. Lugar includes designs for cottages, farm houses and complete farm yards and detailed plans for dairies, dog kennels, hunting stables, piggeries, poultry yards and breweries. It was the last of these which was adapted by Robert and Helenus Scott in their design for a brew house (see Broadbent, The Australian Colonial House, p. 280), the drawing for which is held by the Mitchell Library. This is a nice, unsophisticated copy of this new edition - actually a reprint of the original edition of 1807, with a new title-page. . Some foxing and offsetting, but a very good, largely unopened; flyleaves cut away.
