Ipotesi per l'interpretazione del monogramma PE che dalla prima meta' del secolo IV fino all'inizio del VI compare nei monumenti cristiani e pagani. Secondo alcuni, il monogramma rimanderebbe al concetto di 'vittoria', per altri e' l'iniziale di 'perpetuo', come equivalente di feliceter, formula con cui nei teatri e nei circhi si accalamavano i principi. Insigne epigrafista, è autore delle Iscrizioni Antiche Vercellesi, opera che gli fece guadagnare la cittadinanza onoraria vercellese, nonché la realizzazione del Museo Lapidario nel chiostro della Basilica di Sant'Andrea.
