Blyerts och akvarell, förhöjningar i täckvitt. 17,5 x 14,6 cm. Signerad E. Lundgren. Odaterad, utförd i Spanien antingen omkring 1850, eller på 1860-talet. Smärre missfärgning runt kanten, nålhål i hörnen, lagd på kartong. - - - Ej inramad. Monterad i syrafri passepartout med yttermått 40 x 30 cm som passar standardramar. Fotograferad i en ekram från Stockholm Ram. Några skissartade studier av denna flicka med barn finns bevarade i Nationalmuseum (NMH A 877/1981). Konventionellt tecknade kunde de nästan föreställa en madonna, eller ännu en av Lundgrens koketta spanska flickor. I denna version av motivet är dock allt manér avskalat, verklighetsskildringen tar överhanden och vi får en rörande och osminkad bild av en fattig ung mor som skyler sitt barn för den skarpa solen. Trötthet talar ur hennes blick, som är förlorad i fjärran. Nationalmuseum daterar sitt skissblad, som helt uppenbart hör samman med föreliggande teckning, till 1860-talet. Stöd för en tidigare datering, och en precisering av motivet som en spansk zigenerska, ges dock av Asplund (1914), sid. 1:152. Där avbildas en etsning (NMG 141/1882) som trots vissa avvikelser jämfört med vår bild tycks föreställa samma unga moder. (Etsningen utgör en spegelvänd version, vilket är vanligt när ett motiv graveras.) Asplund hänvisar till ett resonemang av Gustaf Upmark (1886) som är av intresse. Etsningarna "dateras av Upmark till 1849-1853 på grund av en lätt färgläggning med vit gouache på det ena exemplaret [.]. Denna färgstrimma ger onekligen en viss likhet med vissa akvareller från omkr. 1852". Samma accentuering med vit gouache är tydlig i vår bild.

Säkerligen utförd under Egron Lundgrens år i England. Paret tycks beundra ett hästhuvud som skymtar ytterst svagt ovanför dem. Det leder tankarna till de skulpturer från Akropolis som funnits i England sedan början av 1800-talet, de så kallade 'Elgin marbles'. De inköptes 1816 av brittiska staten och utställdes i British Museum, och det är inte omöjligt att vårt eleganta par befinner sig just där under ett kostymevenemang av något slag.
