Attraverso la riflessione critica sui modi e le finalità della rappresentazione artistica si precisa il compito di definire modi e finalità della rappresentazione scientifica, di edificare una scienza matematica della natura. Se la prospettiva dei pittori mostra l'opportunità di definire un piano che intercetti l'immagine visiva, separando l'occhio che vede dall'oggetto osservato, per Leonardo il pittore deve "diventare mente della natura stessa e farsi interprete tra natura e arte".
