Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG-. Photos, Map, Aircraft Three-Views (illustrator). 1st Thus. Books on the air war between Russia and Finland, which began in late 1939, were sparse in the early years followjng WWII and this first English translation of the Finnish original provided a valuable insight into that David and Goliath contest. This was a war with many unique features, notably how a tiny nation initially held at bay the might of a vastly superior neighbour. Also, it was little publicised owing the the wider influence of the wars in rhe Euripean and Pacific theatres. It was also signifcant that the Finnish air arm was equipped with a selection of mostly obslete aircraft from a number of countries, but was able to compete on equal terms with the Soviet air force. However, Finland was forced to surrender (March 1940) to the superior power. Luukkanen's biographical account also covers the second outbreak of war with Russia, in June 1941. The German attack on Russia occurred a week later and Finland did not then face Russia alone. The Luftwaffe began to operate from Finnish air fields and supplies of German aircraft enabled the replacement of the Finn's mixed fighter fleet with late-model German fighters. Although small in numbers the Finnish pilots were experts in their field, with the author beaing one of the leading aces, credited with 54 enemy aircraft destroyed in his two "Winter Wars." His "Fighter over Finland," although an early account on that topic, can still be regarded as a "classic" for that largely overlooked conflict. Features of it worthy of comment are an excellent selection of more than 60 b/w photos, including frontis showing the author, one map, also its two appendices, the author's victories list and the principal aircraft types operated over Finland with each type description accompanied by a a three-view line drawings. The book's English translation was by Manuo A Salo. being first published by Macdonald in 1963, 254 pages, blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG with hint wear spine extremities, faint fade band top edge both boards, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Graphic colour DJ is VG-, unclipped with few short edge tears and small section missing rear panel adjecent spine.
