This work offers a thorough geographical study of the River Nile, a river in Africa which is commonly regarded as the longest in the world. The work looks at the tributaries and basins, looking at the journey of the Nile through its over four-thousand mile run. Henry George Lyons was a geologist, starting his career in the military, during which he was posted in Cairo. After retiring from the army, with the rank of colonel, Lyons became the Director of the Science Museum in London. With a total of fifty-six plates, with twenty-five being folding maps and plates. Most plates have coloured highlights to them. This work is partly misbound, with pages two-hundred and nine to two-hundred and twenty-four being bound between pages two-hundred and forty and two-hundred and forty-one. An ink inscription to the front pastedown states that this copy was rebound in July 1924. Rebound in a quarter calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, spine is worn with slight loss. Further loss to the spine, joints, and leather to the rear board due to rubbing. Tails of the joints are lifting a little, however the hinges are reinforced with cloth and remain secure. Minor marks to the boards. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Ink inscription to the half-title page. Small chip to the fore edge of the folding map facing page 78. Good. book.
