A Troyes, chez Jaques Le Febre Imprimeur & Marchand, 1707, Prima edizione.

Condition: Very Good. First edition. A rare early 18th-century French medical work dedicated entirely to ophthalmology, Traité des Maladies de l'Œil et des Remèdes Propres pour leur Guérison ("Treatise on the Diseases of the Eye and Their Proper Remedies") by Antoine Maître-Jean, royal surgeon at Méry-sur-Seine. Printed in Troye…s by Jacques Le Febvre in 1707, this is the first edition of one of the earliest comprehensive treatises on eye disorders and surgical treatments in French. The text combines empirical case observations with classical medical theory, enriched by the author's own "expériences de physique" (physiological experiments). Maître-Jean discusses nearly every ocular condition known at the time—including cataract, abscess, eyelid deformities, glandular diseases, ulcers, and "fluxions"—offering remedies derived from both humoral and surgical traditions. Addressed to Jean-Paul Bignon, the royal counsellor and president of the Académie Royale des Sciences, the work reflects the transition from Galenic medicine toward a more experimental and anatomical understanding of eye pathology. The text closes with Maître-Jean's hope that young surgeons might study ocular medicine "pour la plus grande gloire de Dieu" ("for the greater glory of God"). Richly typographed with engraved headpieces and tailpieces, this important French medical text contributed to the evolution of ophthalmic surgery and was cited by later 18th-century specialists such as Saint-Yves and de La Faye. Condition & Binding: Contemporary full calf, spine with five raised bands, gilt floral tooling in compartments, and red morocco title label lettered MALADIE DE L'OEIL. Boards show moderate rubbing and light scuffing, with minor chipping to extremities and small losses at spine ends; joints remain sound and the binding presents attractively on the shelf. All edges speckled red; marbled endpapers well preserved and vibrant. Interior remarkably clean, showing only light foxing and faint toning typical of the period. Occasional minor spotting and small stains toward the rear leaves, but paper retains strong texture and clarity. Overall- very good.

Before the late seventeenth century it was thought that a cataract was an opaque skin within the capsule of the optic lens. Although Maître-Jan proved by postmortem examination in 1692 that the cataract was a clouding and hardening of the lens itself, it was not until Michel Brisseau's work on the same subject in 1709 that the medical community accepted it as fact. The method of treatment described by Maître-Jan is the couching operation in which, after incising the suspensory tissues of the lens, the lens was depressed below the level of the pupil and left in place"**5409/ARM3.

Nürnberg, Johann Jacob Wolrab, 1725, 4°, (18), 489, (22) pp., 1 Kupferstichtafel, Pappband d.Zt.; feines Expl. "Called 'the Father of French ophthalmology', Maître-Jan energetically supported Brisseau's doctrine, ensuring its acceptance. As far back as 1692, Maître-Jan had proved that the opaque lens is cataract, but before Brisseau's work appeared it had been regarded as a sort of skin or pellicle immediately inside the capsule of the lens." G & M Hirschberg § 358, p. 3 Garrison & Morton No. 5824 (1st. fr. Ed.).
