Condition: Sehr gut. 171 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. Leichter Lichtrand. - This book has its origins eleven years ago when the Oruro artists, Gustavo and Raúl Lara, took me to visit maskmaker Antonio Viscarra. Then in his sixties, he was creating many of the masks included in this book, in his cramped La Paz workshop. Stacked in a small room near the entrance to his living room -covered with dust and cobwebs- were the molds he had inherited from his grandfather. The molds were no longer in demand, now replaced by elaborate, almost gaudy figures lacking the grace and elegance of their predecessors. I was immediately captivated by Viscarra's warmth and charm and I commissioned him to prepare a complete set of masks using his old molds. Thus began a memorable relationship that lasted until his death in 1985. My fascination with masks grew out of this first visit. Six month later I organized a show at the National Museum of Arts with my new masks collection and that of the National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore. Since then the exhibit "Bolivian Masks", many of which are reproduced in this book, has travelled throughout Bolivia, to the Sao Paolo Bienal in Brazil, to the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C., to Uruguay and to the Seville Worlds Fair in Spain. My interest in masks led to a collection and exhibition of Bolivian feather art and the same with embroidered costumes and textiles. To assure that these collections remain in Bolivia, I established the Quipus Cultural Foundation and have donated hundreds of these objects and 60,000 of my photographs to the Museum of Popular Arts and Cultures. This is a joint project between the Quipus Cultural Foundation and the City of La Paz, to be built on a 30,000 square meters site in the center of the city.
