First edition of this handsomely produced memoir, an invaluable resource for the strategical dimension of the history of the period, and for Macgregor's key rôles in Afghanistan. Volume I traces his career to 1874, mainly through letters to his father; volume II comprises his personal journal during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Army officer, explorer, and military strategist, Macgregor (1840-1887) served with great bravery and distinction through the Rebellion. As second-in-command of Hodson's Horse, he produced several studies on cavalry organization, tactics, and training. In 1864 he served in the Bhutan campaign with General Dunsford's column, later being appointed deputy assistant quartermaster-general on the eastern frontier, where he published a study on mountain warfare. He accompanied the advance guard of the Abyssinian Expedition in 1867, seeing action at Arogee and Magdala, and from 1868 worked on the Gazetteer of India while undertaking key frontier expeditions, including a reconnaissance from the Persian Gulf to Sarakhs, within a few miles of Herat. During the Second Anglo-Afghan War he oversaw the Khyber line of communications, served as chief of staff to generals Maude and Browne, took part in the advance from Jalalabad to Gandamak, the capture of Kabul, the defence of Sherpur, and the march on Kandahar. Macgregor's official history of the conflict was suppressed for containing "a critique of Indian defence policy beyond its terms of reference". As head of the Indian intelligence department - "which he dramatically improved in efficiency" - he produced his "comprehensive and exhaustive treatise The Defence of India: A Strategical Study" (1884), which was similarly suppressed due to its "outspoken and alarmist views on British strategy in event of Russian attack" (ODNB).
