About this Item: 1858, 1858. Pp. viii, 168. With three folding tables. Original cloth, paper label (partly chipped) on spine, sprinkled edges. With old inscription. Copy of Knut Olivecrona (1817-1905), renowned Swedish lawyer and philosopher. First edition. Colonel John Maclean (1810-74) was Chief Commissioner of the province known as "British Kaffraria" in South Africa. In 1860 it became a separate Crown Colony with its own administration under Maclean as Lieutenant Governor, and finally re-incorporated into the Cape Colony in 1866. The word Kaffir is derived from the Arabic term Kafir which means disbeliever and historically used as a neutral term for southern African people. This work is a comprehensive account of the natives containing papers and letters by the Rev. H.H. Dugmore, Warner, Brownlee and Ayliff. A fine copy. Mendelssohn i, 960. Seller Inventory # 100415

About this Item: Mount Coke: Wesleyan Mission Press. Printed for the Government of British Kaffraria, 1858. 8vo., vii + (1) + 168pp., with three folding tables, original green cloth with printed spine label (the label largely defective, however), with an old light stain on upper cover. A very good presentation copy inscribed in ink by Maclean to Robert Vigne*,> and with a coy note in a contemporary hand at head of title: 'Not altogether fit for ladies>'. First edition. 'This volume, the results of the author's efforts to form a compilation of facts concerning the native races, is regarded as one of the best in the subject, and contains many valuable papers by the Rev. H.H. Dugmore, and Messrs. Warner, Brownlee, and Ayliff. The geography, government, laws, and customs of the natives are fully described, and the mass of information thus presented is extremely useful to students of the habits of the aborigines of South Africa. The genealogical tables assist in explaining the somewhat complex system of the Kaffir laws of inheritance and descent, and a census of British Kaffraria in 1857 is appended.' [Mendelssohn, loc.cit.] * Robert Vigne was one of the magistrates in British Kaffraria. Seller Inventory # 26200
