Two volumes bound in one: Translations from Horace ( lxv 172 pages) and Ossian ( lxix 298 pages ) The spine is split from the front board from the head to three quarters of the way down and is torn at the head. Sadly this spoils a very handsome copy.The front end end paper is discoloured around the edges and has an onwrship inscription on its verso; pp xliii to xli have minor circular loss to the blank outer edge near the head. Internally the book is very good, clean, unamarked and solid. A very good copy, with good only boards.

Ossian is the narrator and supposed author of a cycle of poems which the Scottish poet James Macpherson claimed to have translated from ancient sources in the Scots Gaelic. He is based on Oisín, son of Finn or Fionn mac Cumhaill, a character from Irish mythology. Although the poems were well-received, many critics voiced concerns about their authenticity, a debate that continued into the 20th century. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Hardcover.
