Hailing him as 'the greatest living authority on British Theatre', he asks for advice. 'My job is acting, and it has always been an ambition of mine to portray the life of Dan Leno, either…on film or TV. The "powers that be" have shown a certain interest in the idea, and in order to get things moving I want to present them with a full working script or even a synopsis as soon as possible.' He asks him 'what reading matter I might find useful for historical detail of this wonderful artiste'.

ONE: Typed article titled 'The Other Tyrone Power / by / W. Macqueen-Pope.' Undated. 11pp, 4to, paginated 1-9, with two-page 'Inset'. With a few minor autograph emendations. Begins: 'A…t the present moment, Mr Tyrone Power, "in person", is appearing at the London Coliseum in a play called "Mr Roberts". [.] The fact is that there was another Tyrone Power, who was a very celebrated actor indeed in his time.' TWO: Another copy of Item One, but without any autograph emendations. THREE: Page proof of MP's article, stamped '19 AUG 1950 / EVERYBODY'S'. 1p, folio, with small square of paper with additional text attached at foot, and proof of a cartoon titled 'Ferrier's Searchlight (critical of Noel Coward's play 'Ace of Clubs'). FOUR: TLS to MP from Sidney Gordon, Features Editor. 1p, small 4to. He informs him that the editor 'Mr Poke' (Greville Poke, 1912-2000, who also has an Oxford DNB entry) 'would very much like to go ahead with it. / It would certainly tie-up with "Mister Roberts" and perhaps you would send the MS in to us as soon possible'. FIVE: Carbon of TL from MP to 'Mr. Gordon', 28 July 1950. He is enclosing the article, with suggestions for illustrations, including photos of the film star by Angus McBean. SIX: Typed acknowledgement of receipt of article 'The other Tyrone Power'. On printed envelope addressed to 'Macqueen Pope, Esquire., / 359 Strand, / W.C.2.' 1p, 12mo. SEVEN: Carbon of Typed Letter from MP to'Mrs Guthrie'. 3 October 1950. 1p, 4to. He is especially grateful to her for her informative letter, as he would 'like to put this actor who has been so neglected into some sort of proper recognition and remembrance'. He discusses the colour of Power's hair before concluding 'I know Mr Tyrone Guthrie but never knew of his connection with Power.' Postscript: 'Besides my work in the Theatre and at Drury Lane, I am a theatre historian with a fair amount of books to my credit.'.

Cheers!' TWO: ALS, undated but from 1956. 1p, 4to. Arranging a BBC interview with MP. 'I have to choose 5-6 Photos for interview to talk about subject to B.B.C. You and me. Will you mark what you think would interest them & I will see if the subjects appeal to me too.' She will write 'saying all this' to Joyce Belfridge, who has agreed for the interview to take place near to her eight-seventh birthday (thus dating the letter). THREE: ALS, 'Tuesday'. 2pp, 12mo. 'Popie my dear / Your book has just arrived and as usual is grand. I have started reading it and am going to be late for all appointments. / I am a bit sad though to feel there is no picture of your old friends Seymour and Ella!' She ends with renewed thanks, 'a thousand times'. FOUR: ACS (unillustrated), postmarked 8 July 1957. Addressed to 'W. Macqueen Pope Esqr. / 5-6 Coventry St / London.' 'How are you both? / I do hope well with prospect of holiday. Its a long time since I have had news. / Your old friend / Ella.'.

It is puzzling that Van Druten, one of the most successful British playwrights of the early 1930s, should not have an entry in the Oxford DNB. The present entertaining and informative letter is written from the A. J. C. Ranch in Coachella Valley, which Van Druten purchased with his then-lover Carter Lodge and the British actress… Auriol Lee (it was named after the initals of their first names). Van Druten left his interest in the ranch to Lodge (by then in a relationship with Dick Foote), together with the rights to his work, including his dramatic adaptation of his friend Christopher Isherwood's story 'I am a Camera'. (See Isherwood's diaries, and Peter Parker's biography of him.) 2pp, 8vo. Signed 'John van Druten'. A long letter, closely typed. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper, with slight rust staining to corner of one leaf from paperclip. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr. Macqueen-Pope, | Your letter which came yesterday really cries for an answer to so many points.' He begins with a paragraph 'about the Kali Fizzing Towers', the song 'Old French Bonnet', and 'the bells of "Paree", not Calais'. The next paragraph concerns 'Dodie', i.e. Dodie Smith, author of 'The Hundred and One Dalmations', and MP's book 'Twenty Shillings to the Pound'. He moves on to a discussion of the contents of '[t]he Agnes Platt book', which leads him to the critic and playwright J. T. Grein (1862-1935), who was a friend of Van Druten's father 'in his younger days: they came over from Holland more or less at the same time, and shared lodgings somewhere in Shepherd's Bush. I never knew him in my childhood, but his Sunday Times pieces were held up to me as models of dramatic criticism - and when I wrote my first one-act play (at the age of 14) Father sent it to Grein, who wrote back something nice about it.' He has, for 'where it is situated', 'a fairly good theatre library', and describes some of its volumes, enquiring whether one 'would be of any service to you in writing GHOSTS AND GREASEPAINT (which I am very eager to read)'. Another book, which he offer to present to MP 'as a token of the very great pleasure your books have given me', is an American volume on Charles Frohman. The letter ends in personal reminiscence. He recalls that his 'own first theatre was ALICE IN WONDERLAND, around 1906, with Marie Studholme - I think Seymour Hicks was the Mad Hatter - and Phyllis Bedells as the First Oyster. The first play I ever went to in the evening was THE BALKAN PRINCESS, about which you write so much and so glowingly. And I think I remember almost everything I ever heard about the theatre from the age of four onwards.' After a reference to his 1935 autobiography he asks MP if he knows the words to the tearjerker 'Ring down the curtain, I can't sing tonight', which is 'something my nurse used to sing to me'. In the penultimate paragraph he writes: 'A number of "lesser fry" from the old theatre turn up in America, apart from the stars who have taken to Hollywood. Not long ago, when casting a place, there appeared Richard Temple, who told me he was married to Evie Greene. And there are Margery Maude, and Lydia Bilbrooke, and Hazel (formerly Kathleen) Jones - and I am always able to give them their biographies when I meet them - sometimes to their slight embarrassment. Margery Maude told me, when I informed her that I had seen her Titania, with Tree, in the production with the "real rabbits" - that the poor rabbits all died from licking the green paint of the hill-slopes. Did you know that?' He feels that he 'could go on for ever', but must not 'exceed this page'. He concludes by declaring himself to be 'a very ardent awaiter of all the forthcoming books that you mention'. A postscript at the head of the first page reads: 'I do so agree with your description of London as lacking in "all standard and quality". The West End distressed me very badly this year.'.

Berry was hugely popular during the Edwardian period and into the First World War. His greatest success was as 'Mr Meebles' in 'The Boy' (1917). See the recipient's entry in the Oxford DNB. Both letters signed 'W. H. Berry', and the second with long postscript on separate 12mo leaf signed 'W. H. B'. In fair condition, aged and w…orn. ONE: 30 December 1947. 4pp, 4to. 'This letter will be quite a "rat-tat from the past" (as Geo. Graves used to say), & its many a long year since I last saw you - & much has happened since "those were the days" & carriages were at 11. I have been thinking a lot lately of those days (& evenings) when I used to see you entering my tube train at Finsbury Park, both bound for Theatreland & our work therein - which we both loved.' He praises MP's 'recent writing on my favourite topic & my one & only period - the theatre in my time, say from 1890 onwards!' He is fulsome in praise of MP's work, adding 'My friend Wyatt shares these joys with me, & he tells me visited you recently? [.] Strange isnt it that Wyatt is the nephew of my old dresser Bartlett. Who was with me for years until he died?' He discusses his past ill health, adding 'I'm really in pretty good form, considering I'm 77 - in fact only 3 months short of 78.'' After the death of his beloved wife he has been fortunate enough to marry 'an old friend of ours of over 40 years & has lived here for the past 10 years [.] My wife passed away last January, & my dear & I were married at Canterbury on July 17'. He ends with enquiries after 'Jack Macqueen'. TWO: 6 March 1948. 2pp, 4to, and postscript of 2pp, 12mo. He is sorry that he has not been 'up to' responding to MP's two recent letters, and now thanks him 'for the Copy of that nice little mag "The Playgoer," which was, naturally, made more interesting by our article on "Gaiety Gals" - including pictures of Sylvia Storey & Jean Alwyn both in "Havana"! Also my old publicity "guvoner" [sic] H. C. G (Inky) Stevens has an article on "Show folk" which I enjoyed - as you may imagine. Of course I could not refrain from a little longing when I thought of Gaiety, "Havana" & "Show folk"! Ah me.' He has sent him a photograph of the Lowther Arcade, as he 'thought the sight of the dear old place might have revived a few delightful memories'. 'I was much amused about your story of Alphours & Tauber, & I hope that when you refer to my book for anything you want, you won't miss my anecdotes about (1) Geo Edwardes & Willie Ward at a "Cuts" rehearsal ("I must save time") & (2) Geo Edwardes greeting Alfred Lester who had called to protest about me having all the numbers to sing in "Havana"'. In a postscript he writes: 'I, like you, am so fond of, & wrapped up in the Theatre that I love to write about it - if I write any-thing, & I thought I'd struck a good idea (& a good title) when I wrote a book recently: - / "The Private life of a Theatre" / The first chapter was an account of a visit to a typical musical comedy with everything that happens from the entry of the orchestra to the final curtain, & then I say: - "now those few hours are all the general public know of the life of a theatre: but what about all those other 20 hours? Does nothing happen" etc etc / But Hutchinson's didn't like it, so its put away in Lavender with other mementos.'.
