Add to basketFirst edition, first impression, of this valuable account of Leland Buxton's 1905 journey to Sana'a in the company of Aubrey Herbert, as narrated almost 60 years later in a conversation with the Arabia scholar Eric Macro. Buxton (1884-1967) was one of the last surviving members of the veteran generation of southern Arabia explorers alongside Sir Bernard Reilly and Shmuel Yavneeli. Buxton's adventures in Arabia began when he happened across Aubrey Herbert in the lobby of the House of Commons. On the spot, they decided to try and reach Sana'a, departing from Suez in August 1905. "The usual difficulties were encountered when the projected journey to Sana'a was mentioned to the mutasarrif of Hodeida. Herbert explained to him in French that he and Buxton were rich English nobles on their way to shoot tigers in India - 'et lions,' interjected Buxton for good measure" (p. 169). Given permission to proceed, they journeyed onward through Bajil, Beha, Wasil, Atara, and Mafhaq, eventually reaching their destination. There, Buxton spent time exploring the city's Jewish quarter until, refused permission to travel to Aden by Mahmoud Nadim Rey (the acting governor), they embarked on the return journey to Hodeida. From Hodeida, the parties went their separate ways, with Buxton travelling to Muscat and Bahrain on the SS Africa, narrowly missing the missionary-traveller Samuel Zwemer (1867-1952). He returned to England in early 1906 and entered the Egyptian Civil Service in 1907. Buxton's The Black Sheep of the Balkans, a study of British policy in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, was published in 1920 with an introduction by Herbert. Large octavo, pp. 168-72 within the journal. Original red card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. Covers lightly faded and creased. A near-fine copy.
