Published by S. Lapi, Tipografo?Editore, 1886
Seller: The Little Shop of Books, Cootamundra, NSW, Australia
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Mahony, Will (illustrator). A selection of Belli's celebrated Romanesco sonnets, composed in 1832 - sharp, witty, and often subversive portraits of everyday Roman life. Belli's verse captures the voices, humour, frustrations, and piety of 19th century Rome with unmatched linguistic vitality. A cornerstone of Italian dialect literature and an important document of Roman social history. Small octavo. pp. [iv], 1-224. Half vellum over patterned paper boards of the period, the vellum lightly toned; morocco spine-label lettered in gilt ("G. BELLI / SONETTI II"), spine with simple decorative tooling. Endpapers lightly spotted; text with recurrent foxing typical of the Lapi press, but entirely sound. Edges untrimmed. Title page browned with a few rust spots; early faint pencil marks to blank verso. Opening leaf bears the printed warning against counterfeits and the reproduced signature of Belli, as issued. Internally complete. Binding well preserved, with only minor rubbing to patterned boards and slight wear to fore-corners. Vellum spine clean with only light mellowing. Foxing to preliminary and terminal leaves; occasional scattered specks through text; no tears or significant defects. A solid, attractive copy in a tasteful period binding.
