Black & white photocopied illus. throughout. 198 leaves & colophon. Thick 4to, pictorial softcover (spine a little worn). Mantua: Assessorato Cultura Comune di Mantova, 1978. One of 500 copies, this exhibition was organized by Romano Peli and Michaela Versari. It contains essays on mail art by Ken Friedman, Michael Crane, Hervé Fischer, Walter Zanini. G. J. de Rook, Toshinori Saito, Bill Gaglione, Ruedi Schill, Paulo Bruscky, Horacio Zabala, Guillermo Deisler, etc., all translated into Italian. Mailed contributions from practitioners around the world were photocopied and serve as the illustrations in the catalogue. Near fine; spine sunned and a trifle creased.
Illus. throughout (many in color). 96 pp. Oblong 8vo, blue cloth with red lettering. The Hague: The Netherlands Postal and Telecommunications Services, 1986. A playful and scarce mail art catalogue, published by the Dutch postal service; we locate two copies outside of the Netherlands. It begins with a Foreword and essay by famed Dutch designer Paul Hefting, known as "Mr. Stamp." Ulises Carrión's "Mail Art and the Big Monster" is re-published at the end. The original project was initiated by artist Piet Franzen of Haarlem, from page 39: "At the end of 1982 and beginning of 1983 Franzen asked Mail Art artists all over the world to send him their reactions to the celebration of May Day 1983 and to let him know what they planned to do on that day. A number of the hundreds of replies he received to his question are illustrated here as a Mail Art project. The choice of illustrations was governed by the desire for great diversity." The responses of the following artists are reproduced herein: Eduardo Kac, Nam Soonchu, Edgardo-Antonio Vigo, Paolo Scirpa, Graciela Gutierrez Marx, Ingrid Weiss, Jürgen Olbrich, Denis Muzzi, Witold S. Kozak, Claudio Goulart, etc. Near fine; upper cover a little bowed.
Black & white illus. throughout. 67 pp. (incl. upper wrapper). 4to, pictorial wrappers, staple-bound. Lille: DRAC; Eeklo, Belgium: De Media, [1985]. A seemingly unrecorded mail art exhibition catalogue, on the theme of borders and the division of Germany. The show appears to have been the initiative of German artist Friedrich Winnes (1949-2005), who later co-authored Mail Art Szene DDR 1975-1990 (1994) with Robert Rehfeldt. The present show was staged twice, at DRAC in Lille (11-22 March 1985) and De Media in Eeklo (29 March-1 May 1985). A total of 227 artists from countries around the world sent in contributions engaging with the exhibition's theme, most of which are reproduced in the catalogue; each image is framed with the words "Frontieres/Frontiers." In excellent condition. We could not find any record of the catalogue in WorldCat.

Add to basketAn uncommon handmade card from the father of Californian assemblage. Berman was an early practitioner of mail art. The networks of association available to him through the post were central to his work, including his publication of the cult magazine Semina, which he circulated to friends. Though this example is not addressed, the partial cancellation stamp suggests it was posted. The card has an image of a Greek statue; an ink stamp sends "love from the Bermans". Wallace and Shirley Berman "were an inimitable, stylish couple with a natural porosity for the marginal and esoteric who personified Californian post-war bohemianism" (ArtForum online). Gelatin silver photograph (148 x 36 mm) mounted on thick card (99 x 77 mm), "love from the Bermans" stamped in red ink, partial postage cancellation stamp in black ink across head of card and photograph. Upper outer corner just creased, faint fingerprint at head: near-fine.
