Robert Knauss (1892-1955) legte bereits 1933 dem späteren Generalfeldmarschall Erhard Milch, eine Denkschrift ?Die deutsche Luftflotte? vor, in der er den strategischen Luftkrieg gegen die Zentren der gegnerischen militärischen und politischen Macht, zugleich auch zur ?Terrorisierung der Bevölkerung?, verkündete. Hatte Knauss die nationalsozialistische Machtergreifung zurückhaltend, aber doch hoffnungsvoll beobachtet, so überzeugten ihn die folgenden Ereignisse, vor allem die Morde des 30.6.1934, vom verbrecherischen Charakter des Hitlerregimes. tzgrundsätze entwickelte. An der Vorbereitung der deutschen Besetzung Dänemarks und Norwegens 1940 war er maßgeblich beteiligt. Zugleich nahm Knauss Fühlung zum Widerstand gegen Hitler auf, den er als ?Sieger von Stalingrad? apostrophierte. Während Knauss die Tötung des Diktators ablehnte, trat er seit 1942 mit dessen Gegnern erst im Auswärtigen Amt und im Propagandaministerium, dann auch mit Olbricht und Stauffenberg in Verbindung und übernahm es, Mitarbeiter für den geplanten Staatsstreich in der Luftwaffe zu gewinnen.
