This is a classic account of a shooting trip from Moscow across the Urals to the Altai Shan. The author relates his hunting experiences, largely for sheep and ibex, using Demidoff's After Wild Sheep in the Altai and Mongolia as guide, but he also provides much information concerning the country through which he and his companion travelled.

WITH publisher's rare original printed dust jacket. INSCRIBED & SIGNED by the author on the verso of the FFEP and with author's inscription on the short-title page. The copy in the Brooke-Hitchings collection of books in exceptional condition did not have the dust jacket and was not signed. The book offered here is in very good condition with faint thin streak on front cover (= loss of some sheen but no staining), very slight rubbing bottom edges covers & tips corners, village/county blindstamp on FFEP, other than author's inscriptions and signature there are no owner marks or writing on any pages, solid binding, no foxing, complete with all plates and fold-outs. The rare dust jacket has tiny loss lower rear flap corner, tiny loss lower spine corner, no tears, some minor curling at spine ends, no restorations, no tape, no attempted repairs. Hunting Siberian Ibex Capra sibirica, mountain sheep (Siberian Argali Ovis ammon), Siberian Wapiti, and Siberian Roe Capreolus pygargus near the Siberian-Mongolian border in the Kurai Mountains just north of Kosh-Agatch on the Chuisaya Steppe (part of the greater Altai Mountain Range). Swayne was one of the first Europeans to hunt in the area. The book measures 230mm tall x 155mm, and has 259 pages + [1] + [8 pages of ads at end], b/w frontispiece photo, 60 b/w photos, 1 folding b/w plan of stalks, 1 folding b/w map at end, index. 1904 London, 259pp, 60 illus, fold-out map. Major Swayne traveled from Moscow to Mongolia to hunt Altai argali together with H. Seton Karr. He followed in the footsteps of Prince Demidoff who had hunted in the same area some years previously. He obtained sheep, ibex, maral, and Siberian roe deer. One of the better early books on Mongolia that is about as scarce as Demidoff's work. Book contains an appendix on how to outfit a trip to this area. A fine copy, inner hinges strong, cloth and gilt bright, map w/o any tears, AND the books has a VERY GOOD plus jacket which has mild foxing with slight edge wear. Very hard indeed, no impossible, to find a better copy.
