Two pages, 12mo, bifolium, good condition. Text: "I am so sorry that I have not answered your before with regard to your 'Te Deum'. | I fear I cannot offer you the possibility of a performance with any of my Societies. It is a very musicianly made work but I feel is mopre suited for a perfomance in some church or cathedral rather than is some [elided and "the" added in MS] concert hall. | It is written more or less in the Mendelssohn idiom and today it is hard to place anything unless it is definitely a classic or one feels that it is modern (or at least as modern as Elgar). There are some mis-calculations, I feel, for example, the fifth [part MS] bar - the [in MS] flutes and clarinet passage would be quiote inaudible against trumpets and strings. On page 5 the two clarinets would sound very piano after the chorus voices if the choir is at all big, and on p.6 the altos would sound lonely in that the 4 horns double the men's voices and the altos are left alone etc. etc. but these are small details which could easily be altered. My difficulty is that I have no concert available at present where I could place the work. I am so sorry. | I am very much looking forward to the 'Morning Heroes'. I have had magnificent performances of it with ["John Gielgud & Edith Evans" added in MS]". Subscription added in his hand.
