Add to basketCloth. Condition: Good. A new edition of this two-volume autobiography of the French writer Philippe de Commynes, with notes and an introduction. An uncommon two-volume work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Bookplate to the front paste down of both volumes. Illustrated with a folding map to the rear of Volume II. Phili…ppe de Commynes (or de Commines) (1447-1511) was a writer and diplomat in the courts of Burgundy and France. Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve called him "the first truly modern writer". Commynes wrote his Mémoires while exiled to his estate at Dreux. This work is considered an immensely important historical record of the reign of Louis XI. Volume I contains books I to V, relating events from the beginning of Commynes' career to the death of Louis XI; Volume II contains books VI and VII, relating the events of the Italian wars, ending with the death of King Charles VIII of France. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally fairly smart, except for fading to the spines and to the rear board of Vol I. Light mark to the lower extremity of the front board to both volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned with a small ink inscription to the margin of most pages. Good. Not Stated (illustrator). book.

Contact seller4-star sellerSoftcover. Green wraps as portfolio, old tissue guard as dust jacket, various paginations, [44 pp,] of text, 36 color plates, chiefly using primary colors on coats of arms. Text is in French. Appears to present the history of Geneva, Switzerland, along with the coats of arms of its primary families in power. Authored by historia…ns John-Barthelemy-Gaifre Galiffe and Louis-Alphonse de Mandrot. 44 pages of text preface the two sections of plates of coats of arms, which cover Geneva as an Episcopal republic before 1535 (with 26 plates), and Geneva as a reformed republic afterward (with 10 plates). Most pages contain 25 coats of arms, with the family name and geographical or personal qualifiers appearing in tiny print underneath each one. Though the tp and cover give 1859 as a publication date, at least one internal page lists names with 1860 and 1861 following. Of particular interest to historians and genealogists with ties to Geneva. F (Green cover & tissue guard have substantial wear; pages and plates have some foxing and some edgewear but are clear enough to see & use; coats of arms plates are generally clearer than the text pages.).
Armorial Genevois en deux séries. 1. Genéve épiscopale, jusqu'en 1535. 2. Genève république réformée.
