First edition. Regulations and laws on the Missions of the States of Maranhão and Pará and on the freedom of indigenous peoples. This is a curious item. Published as part of a gathering together of laws regarding indigenous peoples and printed at the wishes of King João V. This codified volume was printed with 86 pages. Here is bound up the title page, with the large vignette showing the arms of the royal family of Portugal. It also contains a leaf (two pages) of the instructions from the king to publish the laws. Then is presented the first of these laws, The "Regimento das Missões" (1686) (Pages 1-16 of the codified text). This granted missionaries (particularly Jesuits and Dominicans), temporal and spiritual authority over indigenous aldeias (villages). It regulated "descimentos" (forced relocations of natives to missions), prohibited white settlers from residing in aldeias, and prohibited any non native from entering the villages and removing the villages for service (ie. slavery). This was an effort to protect the natives of Brazil and Maranhão from the abuses of the temporal powers. The governor had expelled the Jesuits, and in this law, he was instructed to allow and facilitate their return. In the copy presented here, the king's instructions are bound at the rear of the book (in the codified volume it is present to the front, immediately after the title). When compared to the copy held at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, our copy is identical in collation (ie signatures are exactly the same), with the exception that the final leaf (page 16) in the BNP copy has the catchword "Tras-" printed to the bottom edge, and followed on page 17 by "Traslado." Although our copy has all other catchwords, this last one has either NOT been printed or has been rubbed away very carefully. Recent black cloth hardback. This is in very good, clean condition. The pages inside are mainly bright and clean. The title page has some darkening and staining, and has a (slightly faint) manuscript annotation to the top of the page, outlining the dates of the original law. Most of the pages have small archival tape repairs to the top edge. The final leaf (instructions for printing) has more extensive archival repair.
