Condition: Gut. 1. ed.,. 145 S. : überw. Ill., Karten, mit zahlr. farbigen Abbildungen / Fotos, Zustand: Exemplar in gutem Zustand, Ränder und / oder Cover etwas berieben. Text / Sprache: Englisch , New Guinea / by Milton and Joan Mann. - 1. ed., This beautiful World 34 , Literaturverz. S. 130 , New Guinea: An island "somewhere near Australia" that has been invaded or administered by a bewildering succession of European and Asian nations, including the British, Dutch, German, Indonesian, Australian, and Japanese. Currently half the country is under Indonesian rule, and the other, Australian administered half is progressing somewhat unevenly towards independence. It was around this latter section of New Guinea (the Territory of Papua and New Guinea) that Milton and Joan Mann traveled-sometimes by plane, by bus, by dump truck, and on occasion by canoe. In both words and pictures they made a detailed record of their impressions, ranging from the unexpectedly strident modernity of Port Moresby to the isolated and primitive island of Daru. Despite the splendor of the volcanic mountain scenery and the colorfully dressed (or undressed) tribesmen, traveling in New Guinea was far from being a vacation. Roads were often blocked, always poorly surfaced, and a canoe journey with a crocodile skin trader came to a halt entangled in the weeds of the Sepik River. Exotic and picturesque are certainly two appropriate adjectives to describe the Mann's journey; the mosquitoes and perils added the spice to adventure. 14251A ISBN 0870111663 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 260 19 cm, gebundene Ausgabe, Hardcover/Pappeinband,
