Prima di vedere quali rapporti esistano fra il titolo di «parens patriae» e il nome di Romolo, è opportuno vedere quali veramente siano stati i grandi romani insigniti del titolo glorioso, che logicamente li avvicinava al fondatore della città fino a renderli compartecipi della sua gloria (e questo potremo appresso dimostrarlo) e forse li identificava completamente col mitico eroe.
