About this Item: Leipzig ? Erste Hälfte 18 Jahrhundert. Oktav, Halblederband, marmorierte Vorsätze, Rotschnitt, 368 S. + etwa 130 S. unpag. Seller Inventory # A 3-10590

About this Item: Lucium Spinedam, Venetiis, 1612. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1612. Two parts in one volume, 536 pages and 128 pages. Text in Latin. Author Paulus Manutius (1512-1574) was the third son of celebrated printer Aldus Manutius and his wife Maria Torresano. Epistles in the Ciceronian style, followed by his own editions/commentary on Cicero's letters and orations. Contemporary vellum, age-worn. Year of publication and author information hand-inked to spine, somewhat faded; additional faded contemporary writing to front cover. Spine square. Binding sound. Prior owner's name inked to front paste-down, interior else free of markings. Very minor occasional insect damage through fore-edge margin of first 140 pages, with almost no impact to text (those responsible seem to have had the courtesy to restrict their few textual wanderings to the spaces between lines). Woodcut vignette to title page. Seller Inventory # BBS-2006347

About this Item: Venice (Venetiis), Apud Io. Griffum, 1584., 1584. 8vo. (XVI),536,(2),128,(5 index),(1 blank) p. Boards 15 cm (Ref: Edit16 CNCE 35382; Graesse 4,375; cf. Brunet 3,1383) (Details: Woodcut printer's device of Gryphius on the title, depicting a griffin, which mythological animal symbolizes courage, diligence, watchfulness, and rapidity of execution, used as a pun of the family (of German origin) name Gryph or Greif. From the claws of this creature hangs a big rectangular stone, beneath which is a winged orb. Edit 16 calls for Griffius's motto on the title: 'Virtute duce / comite fortuna'; our copy however does not have this motto. Except for the 16 preliminary pages and the headings the book is printed completely in italics) (Condition: Binding very scuffed, the protecting paper on the boards is gone. Remnants of marbled paper on the back. The right upper corner of the front cover bumped, and the same corner of the first gathering is dog-eared. Endpapers worn. Ink stain of 9 cm long and 1 cm wide between the printer's mark and the imprint. First and last gathering slightly waterstained) (Note: The Italian classical scholar and printer Paulus Manutius, in Italian Paolo Manuzio, 1512-1574, 'was a Venetian printer with a humanist education, the third son of the famous printer Aldus Manutius and his wife Maria Torresano. Aldus died when the boy was two, and his grandfather and two uncles, the Asolani, carried on the Aldine Press. After a thorough education, Paolo assumed in 1533 direction of his father's business, which had been damaged by the elder generation's refusal to collaborate with scholarly editors. Paolo determined to revive the reputation of the press, and parted company with his uncles in 1540, devoting his output to the Latin classics. He was a passionate Ciceronian, and perhaps his chief contributions to scholarship are the corrected editions of Cicero's letters and orations (Epistolae ad familiares in 1540, Epistolae ad Atticum and Epistolae ad Marcum Iunium Brutum et ad Quintum Ciceronem fratrem in 1547), his own epistles in a Ciceronian style, and his Latin version of Demosthenes' Philippics (Demosthenis orationes quattuor contra Philippum, 1549). Throughout his life he combined the occupations of a scholar and a printer. As a scholar he is remembered for four elegant Latin treatises on Roman antiquities. His correct editions of the classics, printed in a splendid style, were highly esteemed, yet sales did not always support such productions'. (Wikipedia). Our copy is a reissue of the correspondence of Paulus Manutius, which was published by his son Aldus Manutius the Younger in 1580 in Venice. It is the most complete edition and has the same pagination. This correspondence in strict Ciceronian style was first published in 1558 by Paulus Manutius himself, was later revised and augmented, and found many reissues and repetitions) (Provenance: On the front flyleaf in pencil: '16 juni 1971', written by the Flemish linguist Walter Couvreur, 1914-1996, who was an Orientalist, and professor of Indoeuropean linguistics at the University of Gent. It indicates the date of aquisition. The place of acquisition he wrote on the flyleaf at the end: 'Bologna, Gulliera')(Collation: a8, A-X8, Aa-Tt8) (Photographs on request) 500 gr. About this Item: 1581. BUNEL, Pierre, and MANUZIO, Paulo. PETRI BUNELLI, GALLI, PRAECEPTORIS, & PAULAE MANUTII, DISCIPULI, EPISTOLAE CICERONIANO STYLO SCRIPTAE. Aliorum Gallorum Pariter et Italorum Epistolae eodem Stylo Scriptae. Geneva (Henri Estienne) 1581. Octavo. (vii)240(1)319pp. First and only authorized edition. A piracy may have been published in the same year. Estienne woodcut device on title (a philosopher standing at the foot of the Tree of Knowledge, and the motto "noli altum sapere.") The idea for this book stemmed from a conversation between the printer, Henri Estienne, who was known for his erudition, and King Henri III, the dedicatee. The King had asked why Italy, rather than France, claimed the most and best Ciceronian Latinists. Estienne went away and stewed a while, then described the conversation in Latin verse (quoted by Renouard), and published this comparison of letters written in Ciceronian Latin by Pierre Bunel (1499- 1546) and by the great editor of Cicero, Paulus Manutius, son and successor to Aldus. Estienne here champions French Ciceronians, printing the letter in which Manutius admits having learned to write correctly from Bunel, his companion of 40 years (p.111). Bunel's "Familiares aliquot Epistulae," (Paris, Estienne, 1551) was intended for juvenile readers ("in Adulescentiorum Ciceronis studiosorum gratiam"). The second portion, with its own half-title and pagination, contains the letters of Italians such as Longolio and Bembo, and the third, also with half-title, is a group of letters from French Latinists, including King Francis I. In early limp vellum, spine titled in ink. Pastedowns pulling loose; front fly adhering partially to paste-down; light spotting to title, and light marginal dampstain persisting to p.6; browning and corners torn off from pp. x-xi, not affecting text. Covers show age and soil. Small leather library label to spine. (Renouard 1581.5. British Museum 1084 i. 5. OCLC lists 3 copies in the USA). Seller Inventory # 76308
