Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (pen name Moliere)(baptized 15 Jan 1622 Paris - 17 Feb 1673 Paris) was a French playwright, actor and poet, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the French language and world literature. His extant works include comedies, farces, tragicomedies, comédie-ballets, etc. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed at the Comédie-Française more often than those of any other playwright today. His influence is such that the French language is often referred to as the "language of Molière" His 13 years as an itinerant actor helped him polish his comic abilities while he began writing, combining Commedia dell'arte elements with the more refined French comedy. Born into a rich family and having great talent, he had the patronage of aristocrats including Philippe I, Duke of Orléans- the brother of Louis XIV. Despite the adulation of the court and Parisians, Molière's satires attracted criticism from churchmen. For Tartuffe's impiety, the Catholic Church denounced this study of religious hypocrisy followed by the Parliament's ban, while Don Juan was withdrawn and never restaged by Molière. In 1673, during a production of his final play, The Imaginary Invalid, Molière, who suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis, was seized by a coughing fit and a hemorrhage while playing the hypochondriac Argan. He finished the performance but collapsed again and died a few hours later. Molière is the creator of modern French comedy. Many words or phrases used in Molière's plays are still used in current French: A tartuffe is a hypocrite, especially a hypocrite displaying affected morality or religious piety. A harpagon, named after the main character of The Miser, is an obsessively greedy and cheap man. Jones was born in Missouri c. 1873, moved to Cincinnati, worked as coachman and teamster (a driver of horse-drawn wagon teams). In 1905, he shot a Cincinnati police officer and served 5 years in the Ohio Penitentiary. Shortly after his release, on May 31, 1910, he was arrested for assault and battery of a local white woman. The case was dismissed without prosecution. He married Bertha Courtney (referred to in local records as Bertha Jones). On July 14, 1911, Bertha disappeared. On August 4, her decapitated body was discovered in a sewer line in Norwood, Ohio. Police Chief William H. Jackson released this circular on August 8, 1911. Investigators theorized that Jones was a serial killer, connecting him to other local homicides, including the death of an associate, black man named Charles Johnson, who helped Bertha leave Jones. After the discovery of Bertha's body Jones fled to Canada, using the alias "William Campbell" in Montreal. There, in August 1913, Jones (now Campbell) slit the throat of George Muir, the ex-boyfriend of his new girlfriend, Lillie Jackson. He was arrested by Canadian authorities. He was arrested in Montreal for Muir's murder. Ohio never extradited him for Bertha's murder because Canada hanged him on Jan.24, 1914 for George Muir's homicide.
