Iolo Williams' copy with his ownership signature on the first free end-paper. "Published for The Nature Conservancy Council and The Seabird Group." "This book presents the most up-to-date information available on these seabird populations, their numbers and distribution, and their changing fortunes in recent years. The Operation Seafarer survey, carried out in 1969-70 provided a baseline for future work that led to the establishment of the Seabird Colony Register by the Seabird Group and the Nature Conservancy Council. The results and analysis of their counts during 1985-87 form the basis for this book.In Part 1 the general biology and population trends of British seabirds are described to set the scene for Part 2, in which the results and analysis for each of the 24 breeding species are given in detail. Full descriptions of the counting methods and the estimating factors used provide guidelines for future surveys not only in Britain, but wherever seabirds are of interest and importance." .

Add to basket8vo., xviii, 355pp, 30 b/w plates, illustrations by Keith Brockie, numerous figures and tables to text, appendices, references, gazetteer & index, orig. cloth gilt. A fine copy in a fine pictorial dustwrapper. From the library of C. Douglas Deane (Mr C.Douglas Deane was the Deputy Director and the Keeper of Natural Science in the Ulster Museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He served in the Royal Air Force during the war. He also was a member of various Government committees and other organisations relating to the natural history of Ulster and wrote regular articles in the Irish Times, Belfast Telegraph and the Belfast News Letter (Deane, 1983).[1] He joined the staff of the Museum and retired after almost forty-five years. He specialised in birds and mammals of Ireland. He was a founder member of the Ulster Society for the Protection of Birds (later RSPB) and had a keen interest in the local history and naturalists. He received an honoury degree of Master of Science from the Queen's University of Belfast in 1974. He retired in 1977 and was presented with an O.B.E. on the Her Majesty's visit to Northern Ireland). The oceanographic and coastal features of the British Isles provide a wealth of ideal habitats for breeding seabirds . and it is no surprise that the British and Irish seabird populations are of international importance . both in sheer numbers and in species diversity . Indeed, for some species , British waters are host to the greater part of the world's population . Information on these seabird populations, their numbers and distribution, and their changing fortunes in Britain and Ireland . The Operation Seafarer survey, carried out in 1969 - 1970 , provided a baseline for future work that led to the establishment of the Seabird Colony Register by the Seabird Group, and the Nature Conservatory Council . The results and analysis of their counts during 1985 - 1987 form the basis for this book . Improved census methodology and a new computerized database has set the standards for seabird monitoring in future decades . In Part 1 , the general biology and population trends of British seabirds are described to set the scene for Part 2 , in which the results and analysis for each of the 24 breeding species are given in detail . Full descriptions of the counting methods and the estimating factors used provide guidelines for future surveys not only in Britain, but wherever seabirds are of interest and importance . No-one with an interest in seabirds or conservation can afford to be without this authoritative book, nor but be grateful to the small army of professionals and amateurs who have so ably explored our coastal habitats.
