No printer is attributed here but Saul and Lillian Marks of the Plantin Press are known to have frequently worked with Maxwell Hunley in the 1940s. This catalog's typography and title-page ornamentation are very characteristic of Plantin Press work. For example, similar items are illustrated at pages 96 and 160 of Saul Marks and the Plantin Press, The Life & Work of a Singular Man by Lillian Marks (Los Angeles: Plantin Press, 1980). 16pp., 12mo. Stitched into cream wraps with title printed in red on cover. In good condition, with slight wear to overlapping edges of wraps. Inscription in pencil at head of first page: 'ABR from Bob, 1972 | - see colophon' ('ABR' is the London antiquarian bookseller Anthony Bertram Rota). The 'Acknowledgments' (rather than a colophon) on the last page begin: 'Saul and Lillian Marks wish to thank Mr. Robert Elwell for inviting the Plantin Press to show its work at the Grolier Club, [.]'. The Markses are not named as the printers of this elegant little production, with antique headpieces and initial in red ink and modern vignette of two printers working in black on first page.

Mild DJ wear, including browning of spine and bit of uneven browning along edges. Still, a quite attractive copy. ;

A printing of the talk Saul Marks made about the Christopher Plantin before the Zamorano Club, based on the work of Plantin scholars Max Rooses, Maurice Sabbe, Leon Voet, T.F. Dibdin, Theodore Low De Vinne, Colin Clair, Harry Carter, Ray Nash, and others. Also included are "The Office Rules at the Golden Compasses," translated by Peter van der Pas, which are the Master's "standing orders" for those employed at his printing office; such rules include not discussing religion (a heavy fine is imposed on violators), not using obscene language or telling untrue stories, not removing proofs, printed sheets, or anything else from the office, and not discussing the goings-on of the printer's office with outsiders, among many others.
