The mixed-media work of Berlin-based East German artist Markus Draper is a rich exploration of the unfolding of personal and social memory in architecture, history and place. Draper mines the visual metaphors of late-period GDR in his own family history in cast-metal models of prefab high-ri…ses and sensuous oil paintings of interiors and diary entries. Drapers father was a prominent city planner in G.rlitz in the 1980s and his diaries, translated into paintings by the artist, titled Inge Goes to Work on Foot, describe the feeling of complete stagnation that dominated the last decade of the GDR. During that period, former members of the Baader-Meinhof Gang, or the Red Army Faction (RAF), went to ground in the tower-block developments on the fringes of the city Draper models. This compelling and well-designed exhibition catalog includes essays by Clemens Kl.ckner, an interview with former RAF member Ralf B. Friedrich and a discussion between Jennifer Allen and the artist. Aber auch eine Art Kritik: Möglicherweise ist es angenehmer, in einem Zustand der Angst zu verharren, als eine Veränderung der Verhältnisse in Angriff zu nehmen.' Markus Draper, geb. 1969 und aufgewachsen in Görlitz, studierte 1991 bis 2000 an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden, am Central Saint Martins College, London und an der Columbia University, New York. Markus Draper lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.--Markus Draper's More than a story presents a selection of his images going back to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state in the US on 18 May 1980. Draper began to develop a fascination with photos and videos of this natural disaster in 2007. In the same year, he focused for the first time on the volcano's peculiar ash cloud formations-a motif that would become a recurrent subject that still informs his paintings today. It is important for the artist that his pictures cannot be 'located'. 'My paintings do not seek to depict a concrete event-rather, they express a general feeling of insecurity, acting as a kind of diagnosis of society: there is a sense of unease, of vague fear and malaise that cannot be related to any specific causes. They also express a kind of criticism. It may be more comfortable for people to persevere in a state of fear than attempt to change the situation they are in.' Markus Draper, b. 1969, raised in Görlitz. In the period from 1991 to 2000 he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (HfbK), at Central Saint Martins in London, and at Columbia University, New York. Markus Draper lives and works in Berlin.
