Condition: Fair. 324 p., not ex-lib., no former owner's name, no markings other than faint splatter along front gutter, which is cracked; 16mo; clean green-patterned end pages and clean within though age-toned; frontis. engraving of author with tissue guard; marbled boards in rose and gilt; half leather bound in maroon but most of leather stripped from spine,and leather corners bumped. Dedicated to Washington Irving by an author very much appreciated in his own day. Deserves skillful repair.

Firm binding, all gilt stamping complete and intact. Exposed corners. Lacking flyleaves, hinges showing hints of repair but firm. Scattered internal foxing, mostly light. Consisting of twelve issues, published May 10 - October 9, 1850, numbered 1-12, here gathered in book form. Labeled as "Volume II - Sixth Edition" on title page. x,298 pp. + 6 pp. opinions of the press at rear, illus. w/ 6 engraved plates and engraved masthead for each issue. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.

Second (2nd) Printing of Fourth (4th) Edition. Originally published in 1851, it went through subsequent editions in 1863 and 1883 before the 1889 edition, of which this is the second printing. This volume contains a New Preface written for the 1883 edition as well as the Preface to the 1863 edition (which includes the Dedicatory Letter to Washington Irving found in the 1851 edition). Fine- condition. No Dust Jacket (as issued). The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with gilt top-edge, deckled fore-edges, frontispiece by Percy Moran with protective tissue in place, and no markings of any kind. The Binding is full dark green cloth with bright gilt border to front board, bright gilt oval surrounding a white, raised head of a Roman figure in center of front board, worn gilt title, etc., to spine, and some wear at corners and spine ends. See photos. 258 pages. 4" x 6 5/8". Pedro Calderon de la Barca wrote in 1636 a play entitled La Vida es sueño ("Life is a Dream"). Perhaps, that inspired Marvel/Mitchell, for the last paragraph of the book reads, "The old man does not stir: his eyes do not move: they seem fixed above. The child cries as his lips touch the cold cheek. - It is a tender SPRING flower upon the bosom of the dying WINTER.".

Imaginative essays about the pleasures of American life and dreams. Reveries of a Bachelor examines the dream-like lives Americans were living at the time. It was one of the top best sellers of its time but has received little attention from 19th century literary critics. In the text, Ik Marvel theorizes on boyhood, country life style, marriage, travel, and dreaming. Reveries of a Bachelor was one of poet Emily Dickinson's favorite books.

The prolific Mitchell produced dozens of volumes of the sort of miscellaneous prose that earned him the damnedest of faint praise from his compatriot Oliver Wendell Holmes - who deemed him ".one of the pleasantest of our American writers."
