First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good to Good Plus. First Edition. The Rev. J.M. Austin, an upstate New York Universalist minister, editor and author, was also a well-known abolitionist and defender of unpopular causes in mid-19th century New York State. This book of advice on morals and ethical behavior, dress and demeanor, conversation and letter-writing, religion and marriage, was originally a series of essays published in the Evangelical Magazine and Gospel Advocate in 1837-38 before being issued in hardcover in 1838. At one time, it could be found in many public school classrooms. First Printing, First Edition Thus. Gilt-bordered, black boards and gilt-decorated spine with three raised bands. 390 pages; text shows marbled end papers with all text edges gilded. The boards show considerable surface and edge wear, with some staining. All four corners are bumped. The text is foxed and stained, in varying degrees throughout, without affecting legibiblity. In fact, the individual pages are surprisingly clean and unmarked with the exception of a faint handwritten note -- "New Year's present, 1839" -- on the front end page. The binding is tight and square. Overall, a very decent and collectable copy.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. This sermon is on the union between Jesus Christ and the saints, preached in Boston. 10 leaves, 20 manuscript pages. Approximately 6000 words in Samuel Mather's hand. Measures at 6.25" x 7.75." Provenance from the collection of the late Richard Durnin, professor of American History, Mather family expert and avid collector. !Reverend Doctor Samuel Mather visited Europe when a young man, but we have no knowledge of his travels in that continent. He probably visited his uncle, the Reverend Samuel Mather, who was a preacher in Witney, in Oxfordshire, England. At the age of thirteen he entered Harvard College; graduated 1723, at age 17. He probably studied theology under the direction of his father, Reverend Doctor Cotton Mather, and it is said he soon obtained a good reputation. In 1732 he was chosen colleague with Reverend Mr. Gee of the Second Church in Boston (North Church), in which his father was minister. Box 2 Folder 3. Inscribed by Author(s).

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Samuel G. Drake here presents Increase Mather's 'A Brief History of the War with the Indians in New England' which was first published in late 1676, just a few months after the end of the war, along with the account of the same war written about twenty years later by Cotton Mather, as it was published as the seventh part of the latter's history of New England, 'Magnalia Christi Americana' in 1702. Drake, who was a founder of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, editor of the first fifteen volumes of the 'Register', and a prominent antiquarian and historian, has added an extensive introduction and numerous informative notes. Drake's annotated edition of these works was published in 1862.Increase and Cotton Mather were, respectively, the son and grandson of Rev. Richard Mather, the immigrant minister of Dorchester, Massachusetts, and the founder of one of New England's most prominent families. The Mathers were prolific writers and collectors, and the extant materials from their libraries, much of which is now preserved at the American Antiquarian Society, are an invaluable historical resource. Included in this work is a genealogical chart tracing the Mather family through several branches from the mid-1500s to the mid-1700s.
