Bravissima a scuola, un po' più sensibile e più acuta della media dei suoi coetanei. Un giorno si ammala di mononucleosi e di colpo le crolla il mondo addosso: smette di mangiare, dentro sente un grande vuoto, indifferenza verso tutto e tutti. Quando arriva a 38 chili, i genitori la ricoverano. In ospedale, Mathilde vuole solo dormire. "Vivere non serve a niente, ma nemmeno morire, per questo non mi sono suicidata", dice. Ma il suo nome significa "felice di combattere", è lei stessa a dirlo quasi inconsapevolmente alla psicologa. Così comincia a chiedersi cosa sia successo in quella sua testa così confusa.
