One of the four Canadians, clergyman-turned-explorer Laurie Dexter, handsomely inscribes and signs the half-title page in blue ballpoint to a couple who actually experienced an Arctic trek: "For Bob and Ibby / In memory of special / shared experiences in the / far North, and with best / wishes for good health and / safety across many 'Bridges' / ahead. / The Northwest Passage / August 12, 2000 / Laurie Dexter." Robert Malott (1926-2018) was a noted Chicago business leader, CEO of FMC Corporation, Republican politico and philanthropist -- as well as avid amateur explorer. An exceptional copy.

Dezember 1884 in Fürstenberg; gest. 17. Oktober 1955 in Haimhausen) war ein deutscher Maler des späten deutschen Impressionismus. Er ist vor allem als Tiermaler (Kühe, Ochsen) bekannt, er war aber auch ein Porträtist, Blumen- und Stilllebenmaler. Von 1906 bis 1913 setzte er sein Studium an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München fort. Dort besuchte er die Aktmalklasse von Ludwig von Herterich und später die Tiermalklasse von Heinrich von Zügel, dessen Meisterschüler er 1907 wurde. Mit Zügel verbrachte Bergmann die Sommermonate in Wörth am Rhein. 1909/10 studierte er in Paris, wo er sich mit Marcel Duchamp anfreundete. An der nationalsozialistischen Propagandaschau Große Deutschen Kunstausstellung im hierfür gebauten Haus der Deutschen Kunst in München war er zwischen 1937 und 1944 regelmäßig beteiligt, insgesamt wurden 19 seiner Werke ausgestellt. Davon wurden drei Arbeiten von Adolf Hitler erworben. Stilistisch sowie räumlich wird Bergmann der Dachauer Schule zugerechnet.

An excellent example of the édition de tête with the additional signed suite. From the edition limited to 225 copies each signed and numbered by Weber in ink, with this one of the first 25 from the édition de tête specially bound and with the additional portfolio of signed woodcuts; the remaining copies were issued in cloth and without the signed suite. Max Weber (1881 - 1961) was a pioneering American painter and printmaker who studied in Paris in the early years of the twentieth century where he was exposed to the work of Cézanne, Picasso and Matisse, met Guillaume Apollinaire, attended Gertrude Stein's salon and made friends with Douanier Rousseau (Weber helped organise his first US exhibition). On his return to the US in 1909, Weber is credited with the introduction of Cubism to the New World. 'Most of the woodcuts in this volume were made from the walls of honeycomb cases. The soft silk-like quality of the basswood had a strong plastic appeal . The delight in cutting the first block and the thrill of seeing the first printing on paper were so stimulating that a second and third were cut. With increasing skill and sustained interest a set of about forty was completed . Every bit of material, be it stone, wood, ivory, bone or metal, contains a work of art. To bring to light the hidden beauty, the artist must establish spiritual intimacy with, and respect for, his material. Most of the small abstract woodcuts were made in 1918. In concept, designa dn graphic features the entire series is an outgrowth of crystal figure drawings and paintings done in 1911 - 1914, and abstract sculpture in 1915. The larger figurative woodcuts were made more recently.' (Max Weber writing in his introduction).

Clean and Near Fine in its decorative boards, with very light edgewear. Internally all-but-pristine, with no writing or markings to speak of. Quarto, deckled edges, printed on very thick handmade paper. With 11 Max Weber woodcuts complementing his own verse. Introduction by Benjamin De Casseres. Signed.

Boards are worn, more so along the top where they are discolored. Spine appears to have been carefully reattached along the left edge and is worn and chipped. Internally a little offsetting and foxing throughout.
