The boards' corners and several places on the edges are threadbare. The back board has a few faded spots; the front board is less thus. The front FEP, about a fifth of the front pastedown and the bottom third of the back FEP are missing. The text block ends have darkened. The first 18 pages have water stain on two margins. About a fourth of the rest of the pages have water stain on the top corners. Several pages have other dark stains. 8 page corners have chips. The front pastedown has an ink stamp of an owner's name. On his trip for the railroad he visited Houston, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Fort Concho, Pecos, and Presidia Del Norte. He described the topography, the flora and fauna, agriculture, stock-raising, industry and life and customs of the people. He noted the German settlers and their differences from the Americans; soldiers, white and black; Mexicans, homes, religion, education, and culture on the frontier.
