The first half of the essay develops an interpretation based upon one signed Gould-drawing, and upon indirect evidence from the style of Gould's contemporary, the renowned animal-painter, Joseph Wolf. The second half supports but modifies this interpretation in the light of recent examination of overseas collections. The styles of Gould's artists are discussed and the significant characteristics of overseas collections of Gouldian archives listed. Some original drawings and reproduced here for the first time.
