When WWI broke out, the Goeben…and Breslau were trapped in the Mediterranean Sea, and chased by the British Mediterranean fleet. The two German ships fled to Turkey for safety and were, technically, purchased by the Turks. This act effectively placed the wavering Ottoman Empire to throw its lot in with the Central Powers. Turkey officially declared war against the Allies on Oct. 29, 1914.
