Weil die Spartiaten den Staat, sein Wesen und seine Geschichte, so ganz bestimmten, muß ihr Schicksal, insofern es blutmäßig bedingt ist, den Mittelpunkt unserer Darstellung bilden, nicht die äußere Staatsform oder Einzelzüge der bürgerlichen Zucht. Eine Betrachtung der spartanischen Geschichte nach ihren lebensgesetzlichen Grundlagen und der Stellung der Spartiaten zur altgriechischen Wertewelt, insbesondere nach ihrem Verhältnis zum Boden, ist die Voraussetzung für das Verständnis nicht nur des Wesens ihres Staates in seiner Blütezeit, sondern auch der Ursachen und des Verlaufs seines Verfalls; denn auch dieser spielt für eine ganzheitliche Bewertung eine bedeutende Rolle. -- Die Art der Behandlung unserer Frage ist wesentlich durch die Quellen bestimmt, die zur Verfügung stehen.
