The research took a comparative approach to the digestive systems of various animals in order to determine what role different organs play in the production of this substance via the breakdown of benzoic acid, and further the origins of hippuric acid in herbivores. The book's findings challenge previous assumptions about how and where hippuric acid is produced. The work may be of interest to those who wish to learn more about the chemical processes of digestion and the production and analysis of hippuric acid. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

After 1858 he wrote largely on physiological-chemical problems. He was mainly concerned with the nature and the decomposition of protein compounds in the digestive system. The results of his investigations, undertaken alone as well with collaborators, were published in 'Zeitschrift für Rationellen Medizin', edited by his friend Jakob Henle. After 1869 he published nothing anymore under his own name. -cf. K.E. Rothschuh, DSB IX, p.528f.
