New Haven, crown octavo, xix, [1], 256 p., tables, and 154 text woodcuts. ***Content: This was Shepard's first book, later accompanied by a second part, published in 1835. [See my ABE listing, OG5060.] This volume considers the theoretical aspects of mineralogy, such as terminology and nomenclature, and proposes a scheme of classification. Numerous tables describe the characteristics of the various mineral species. When this volume was issued, Shepard was a lecturer on botany at Yale; he later had a long and distinguished tenure at Amherst College. ***Condition: A Good copy in the original navy blue paper-covered boards, with a red linen-cloth spine, with the original printed paper label on the backstrip. Covers lightly edgeworn, spine cloth uniformly sunned and worn at the ends, and covered with clear tape; label intact and readable under the tape. Outer joints tender, inner hinges solid, binding quite firm. Text pages untrimmed, light spotty foxing internally, but many pages are quite clean and bright. Contemporary inked signature of George W. Keim on the title page, and later ownership bookplates on the front endpapers. A sound copy of a scarce treatise in its original state. Hazen 9489. BMNH 1913. Ward and Carozzi 2040.

New Haven, crown octavo, two volumes: [xliv, 300 p. and 271 woodcuts; 331 p. and 229 woodcuts]. ***Content: These volumes are the companion to a previous volume, separately issued by the author in 1832. [See my ABE listing, OG5059.] As the title indicates, this treatise describes the various mineral species according to Shepard's scheme of classification, founded partly on the work of Mohs. The illustrations are mostly crystallographic diagrams. The volumes are dedicated to Benjamin Silliman. When these volumes were issued, Shepard was a lecturer on natural history at Yale; he later had a long and distinguished tenure at Amherst College. ***Condition: A Good+ set in the original light green, paper-covered boards and brown linen-cloth backstrips, with the original printed paper title labels on the backstrips. The covers are moderately edgeworn; tape marks and ink spots on the boards and backstrips. The title labels are mostly complete, with all lettering preserved. The outer joints are split, but the hinges are solid and the covers are well attached. Bindings very firm. Text edges untrimmed. The text pages and illustrations are pristine: fresh, crisp, clean and bright, with none of the foxing typical of this work. Library markings on title pages and card pocket on rear pastedowns. This ship's predecessor, the USS Lake Champlain (CV-39), recovered Shepard and the Freedom 7 (illustrator). Signed Photograph. Framed color photograph with museum glass, full piece measures 18" x 23." Dark cherry wood with silver trim. This piece is signed on the gray matte, below the photograph. Provenance: A gift from a flag officer to an employee at the Pentagon Office Building in Crystal City, VA, which closed during the 2011 Base Realignment and Closure. Inscription reads: "First US Space Flight - 5/5/61 - To The Crew Of Lake Champlain (CG 57) - Just One Of The Many 'Firsts' For A Great Name - Alan Shepard / Rear Admiral, USN (ret)." An exceptional association piece. On May 5, 1961, American astronaut Alan Shepard (1923-1998) became the first American to travel into space aboard the Freedom 7. His suborbital flight lasted only 15-minutes. His spacecraft was recovered by the USS Lake Champlain (CV-39). Upon his successful completion of the flight, Shepard was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal from President John F. Kennedy and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Shepard returned to space in 1971 aboard Apollo 14, becoming the 5th person to walk on the moon and oldest person to date. The USS Lake Champlain (CG-57) was commissioned in 1988 and remains in active service today. Signed.
