(Voir Vicaire VII, 42 à 68)] Bien complet deds 36 planches hors-texte, sous serpente (non légendée), contrecollées sur papier de Chine, dont 7 portraits gravés sur acier et la carte coloriée de l'Île de France dressée par Dujour, l'ouvrage compte également environ 400 vignettes et 50 grands sujets gravés sur bois d'après les dessins de MESSONIER, Tony JOHANNOT, Eugène ISABEY, Paul HUET, STEINHELL, etc. BERNARDIN de SAINT-PIERRE (1737-1814) livre avec Paul et Virginie une histoire d'amour tragique entre deux enfants élevés dans le cadre paradisiaque de l'Île de France, (actuelle Île Maurice). Cette édition est illustrée par de grands dessinateurs du livre romantique, et notamment par Tony Johannot. Celui-ci : "l'enfant gâté de l'Ecole Romantique, fidèle du Slaon de Charles Nodier, à la Bibliothèque de l'Arselnal. Ce fut surtout un vignettiste et dans ce genre modeste il montra un talent de premier ordre. Ses charmantes illustrations sont dignes de prendre place à côté des meilleures gravures du XVIIIe siècle. Plus de 150 ouvrages furent illustrés par lui et le nombre des gravures qu'il y créa dépasse 3000. (.). Il débuta au Salon de 1827 avec une gravure et commença à y envoyer des peintures à partir de 1831. Il continua jusqu'à sa mort à prendre part aux Expositions de Paris. Il fut un des collaborateurs assidu de l'Artiste. Il fut médaillé en 1831 et1848, et décoré en 1840." (Bénézit, VI, 81). Quelques petites piqûres, petites taches et rares pliures internes, coins émoussés, tranche-filles usées, dos insolé, légère usure aux mors. Oeuvre originale. .
