This paper provided the first direct physical and chemical proof that thorium undergoes nuclear fission similarly to uranium. This work was considered a milestone in the development of nuclear fission. Meitner was a colleague of Otto Hahn, who performed the first nuclear fission experiment in 1938. In fact Meitner, who had fled the Nazis in the 1930's, reported the achievment of fission by Hahn before Hahn himself who was initially mistaken about the results of his experiment.
