The first edition of each of the first four parts of Thévenot?s monumental work. Amongst travel collections of the seventeenth century, Thévenot?s occupies a distinguished place, being one of the most complete and lavishly produced. Its scope includes Africa, the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Americas, Australia and other regions. The narrative of Abel Tasman on Australia is certainly one of the most significant and primary sources of information on the island continent. The collection is also of great American interest, containing Palafox?s study on the natives, Acarette du Biscay?s relation of La Plata, and Gage?s narrative, which includes an important passage on Mexico, and is profusely illustrated with full-page woodcuts. Asia and Africa are also well represented, with over half of the first volume being dedicated to these regions. The work is illustrated with maps and views. The maps include the famous Tasman map of Australia (Hollandia Nova) in its fifth state (with rhumb lines and the Tropic of Capricorn, and '19' added at top right). The importance of this map can hardly be overstated: it is a cornerstone of Australian cartography, both as the earliest obtainable map of the region as well as the predominant depiction by which the West would know the island for about a century. Amongst the numerous other maps are one of Japan and Pegu (usually lacking) and charts of the Indies, China, Hindustan, and East Africa; the plates include depictions of costumes, plants, and architecture. Thévenot?s work is an exceedingly difficult book to collate: 'Bibliographers have expended great pains on the collation of the Thévenot collection' (Catalogue of the John Carter Brown Library, vol. III, 102); 'Collection interessante, dont il est difficile de trouver des exemplaires complets' (Brunet). Thévenot?s collection was published in parts and over roughly 10 years, thus there are virtually no two copies alike. The first part went to the printer in 1663, the second and third in 1664 and 1666, and the fourth in 1672; a fifth part was being prepared at the time of Thévenot's death, leaving the work uncompleted. Sabin?s note is very enlightening regarding this issue: 'It will be understood from this that there really was only one edition of Thévenot, and as that edition was completed only in 1696, the issue bearing that year on its general title-page is ordinarily regarded as the standard for collation' (JCBL). A Cornerstone Rarity Relating to the Mississippi and AustraliaWith Very Rare Proof State of the First Printed Map of the Upper MississippiAnd an Extra Plate (Thevenot's Spirit Level)A major rarity of 17th-century&nb. Small 8vo. Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked, with original gilt backstrip and red leather label laid down. Corners sympathetically refurbished. Raised bands. Remnant of early unidentified typographical bookplate on front pastedown. Early ink ownership name on titlepage (blocked out at an early date). [2, title page],16,43,[1],18,[2],32,[4],20,14,8 pages. Title vignette. With all 3 folding maps (2 engraved, 1 woodcut) present and 5 engraved plates (over the usual 4 - as this example contains 2 instances of the spirit level plate, each one adhered to verso of a preceding leaf). Plus 10 engraved natural history illustrations in the text. Lacking only the final 16-page text section, Le Cabinet de Mr. Swammerdam, concerning insects, otherwise complete, with all the maps and plates, including the key important text relating to the explorations of Joliet and Marquette. A Cornerstone Rarity Relating to the Mississippi and AustraliaWith Very Rare Proof State of the First Printed Map of the Upper MississippiAnd an Extra Plate (Thevenot's Spirit Level)A major rarity of 17th-century frontier exploration in North America. Thevenot's book includes the first publication of Father Marquette's 1673 discovery of the Mississippi River, including a remarkable map of the Upper Mississippi - often heralded as the first map of the Mississippi River. The present example of the book, with title page dated 1682, includes all the maps and plates of the 1681 first issue. Indeed, the primary map, Carte de la Decouverte Faite l'an 1663 dans l'Amerique Septentrionale, is here present in an extremely rare proof state - with the year of the Mississippi explorations incorrectly noted as 1663 (most examples of this map are of the third state with the year corrected to 1673, see below for details). Also notable in the present example is the presence of two impressions of the engraved plate illustrating Thevenot's spirit level. This important book includes the first publication of Father Marquette's account, in company with Joliet in 1673, of the upper Mississippi River, with explorations as far as the Arkansas River. The result of this expedition paved the way for French dominance in the Mississippi Valley during the following century. The map which accompanies this account is a major cartographic landmark for the exploration of the interior of North America: it is the first printed map to bear the name Michigan, it shows the lake of that name, and maps the Mississippi River from its headwaters to the sea. A figure representing an Indian deity appears near the center of the map, Manitou, here somewhat enigmatically identified as Manit8.The text of the narrative recording the discovery of the Mississippi River is remarkable for blending careful description and epic discovery in matter-of-fact language that borders on understatement. Here follows a translated extract:Here we are, then, on this renowned River, all of whose peculiar features I have endeavored to note carefully. The Missisipi River takes its rise in various lakes in the country of the Northern nations. It is narrow at the place where Miskous [the Wisconsin] empties; its Current, which flows southward, is slow and gentle. To the right is a large chain of very high Mountains, and to the left are beautiful lands; in various Places, the Stream is divided by Islands. sailing quietly in clear and calm Water, we heard the noise of a rapid, into which we were about to run. I have seen nothing more dreadful. An accumulation of large and entire trees, branches, and floating islands, was issuing from the Mouth of the ri. Book. …

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: VG+. The Definitive Travel Collection of the Seventeenth Century--Includes the Early Appearance of the Abel Tasman Diary A handsome example of the 1696 final edition of Thevenot's Relation de Divers Voyages--th. Folio. Five parts (though fifth only fragmentary, as always) in two volumes. Full contemporary calf, front with gilt arms of the Biblioteca Lindesenia. Expertly rebacked to style. Spines in six parts, separated by raised bands, compartments with floral gilt toolings, each volume lettered in the second compartment "VOYAGE DE THEVENOT" and "TOME I" / "TOME II" in the third. Minor foxing spots and toning to leaves with occasional soiling but maps in excellent condition with minor occasional tears. (See Description for detailed collation.) The Definitive Travel Collection of the Seventeenth Century--Includes the Early Appearance of the Abel Tasman Diary A handsome example of the 1696 final edition of Thevenot's Relation de Divers Voyages--the only edition to include extremely rare fragments of the never-completed fifth volume. A remarkable book, it represents the culmination of the great travel collections of De Bry, Purchas, and Hakluyt. It also has an incredible selection of maps, including the first map of Australia and New Zealand. This book is extraordinary for its inclusion of the immensely important four-page diary of the voyage of Abel Tasman, which the definitive bibliography of the book notes is "missing in totality in many examples." It is no exaggeration to state that Thevenot's work is one of the most complete and lavishly produced travel collections, with its scope extending to Africa, the Far East, the East Indies, the Middle East, Oceania, and North and South America. The sheer collation of sources is impressive, with Thevenot using not only the Jesuit Relations, which were a popular and important source for relaying discoveries to Spain and France in the seventeenth century, but he also published the accounts of English, Spanish, Italian, and German seamen employed in trade and the service of their states. A number of the sources that appear in this text had never before been published, allowing this book to be the sole repository for some of the most detailed accounts of seventeenth-century travels. The book's publication history (discussed further below) means that few examples are alike. This example includes an unusually extensive collation, including a number of fragments in its fifth part that are seldom found. Among these are the accounts of the winds between the Low Countries and the East Indies, and the extremely rare Spanish account of the Solomon Islands. Melchisedech Thevenot was one of the most important seventeenth-century French men of letters, remarkable for the breadth of his work. Not only was he noteworthy for his travel writings and theses in medicine, astronomy, physics, and other sciences, but he is also known as the inventor of the spirit level and the author of The Art of Swimming, one of the first works on the subject. For this, he has been inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The Tasman Diary One of the rarities contained in this book is the extract from a suppressed diary of the voyage, which is the fourth appearance of a log of the journey in print and the second translation of the journal. Over four pages, the highlights of the diary are described, with the discovery of Van Diemen's Land, Tasman's descriptions of Aboriginal peoples, and the famous first European voyage to New Zealand all detailed. While the cartographic dissemination of Tasman's discoveries is to some extent better understood, the lineage of the diary is less well understood. The first printed description of the voyage appears in Montanus's 1671 De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld, in which a narrative appears not in the form of a journ. Book. …

Add to basketFirst edition of the first French book on swimming and one of the earliest books on the subject in an era when most Europeans, even sailors, could not swim. The book was widely read during the 18th century, including by Benjamin Franklin, an avid swimmer in his youth. The book is illustrated with 35 engraved plates by Charles Moette of people swimming. Thévenot describes a breaststroke executed with the face out of the water and an underwater arm recovery (the stage of a stroke when the limbs relax and return to the starting position). After the English translation of Thevenot's work became the standard swimming reference, the breaststroke remained the most common stroke used by swimmers for centuries. In his preface, Thévenot rightly claims his book to be the first on the subject in French, the only preceding works known to him in any language being Nicolas Wynman's Colymbetes (1538) and Sir Everard Digby's short Latin tract De arte natandi (1589, translated into English in 1595). Thévenot, who was a scientist, traveller, cartographer, orientalist, inventor, and diplomat, is often confused with his nephew, the traveller Jean de Thévenot. Duodecimo (149 x 82 mm). With 35 engraved plates. Attractive 18th-century French mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments with flower tools, sides with triple gilt rules, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Engraved bookplate of Jean-François Gillet, écuyer (squire), 1778; small modern MK bookplate. A little rubbing to extremities, title leaf lightly spotted, else an excellent copy of this charming book.…

Add to basketFirst volume (of three as numbered, but intended for binding as two) of Thévenot's travels in the Levant in the years 1655 to 1659, including Constantinople, the Holy Land and Egypt, and his further travels to Arabia, Mecca and elsewhere. In the Dutch editions volume 1 is more extensive than volumes 2 and 3, and in the 1723/24 and 1731 editions (both called the second edition on the title-pages) volume 3 has only a divisional title-page, so it was clearly the intention to bind volumes 2 and 3 together, making two volumes of about equal length. The present copy is volume 1 of this 1731 edition. With an 18th-century(?) bookseller's note on an endleaf. With marginal chips in the engraved title-page, a few leaves somewhat browned, but in good condition and with large margins. The binding is worn. A detailed account of travels in the Levant, beautifully illustrated from the plates made for it by Jan Luyken in 1681.l V. Eeghen & V.d. Keller 47 note; Klaversma & Hannema 1416; Landwehr 258 note; Tiele, Bibl. 1090 note. 18th-century half calf (sewn on 4 cords), sprinkled-paper sides, refurbished in the 19th century and with a 20th-century spine label.
