Hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. Schutzumschlag. 1. Auflage. First edition of this vivid contemporary reflection on the Spanish Civil War, published in exile in Zurich in 1937 by Jean Christophe Verlag under the pseudonym Peter Merin. Written by the Yugoslav art historian and writer Otto Bihalji Merin (1904-1993), the work combines eyewitness reportage with historical and art historical reflection, linking the violence of the present to Spain's cultural memory. Moving between front line observation and meditations on the nation's artistic heritage, Merin portrays a country suspended between destruction and renewal. Echoing Goya, he presents the conflict not merely as political catastrophe but as a recurring human tragedy. The striking original dust jacket, among the earliest designs by Richard Paul Lohse, uses photography in a manner unusual for his later work; copies retaining the jacket are now scarce. Felix Wiedler, Book Design Story, # 63; Berthold et al., Deutsches Exilarchiv 1933-1945, # 500. Octavo (20.4 x 13.0 cm). German text. Grey cloth, lettered in red; dust jacket and binding by Lohse. The jacket with only faint rubbing to extremities; a near fine copy of this important exile memoir.
